Yale Zone Catalogues - Integrated Version Yale University <Trans. Astron. Obs., Yale Univ. 11-32 (1939-1983) (see Source References)>
ADC_Keywords: Positional data ; Proper motions Description: The various volumes of the Yale Zone Catalogues have been combined into a single, homogeneous, machine-readable volume, sorted by position, containing the information common to most of the volumes. Additional data are provided in separate files. The notes have been transcribed into a machine-readable form. Errors detected in the course of the preparation of the catalogue, as well as previously known errors, have been corrected, and supplementary data have been added. Introduction: In the late 1920s Yale University Observatory started to photograph the sky in large fields to determine positions and proper motions for stars in the Astronomische Gesellschaft (AG) zones. Most of the sky has now been measured and the positions and proper motions published in various volumes of the Transactions of the Yale University Observatory. Because the preparation of these volumes extended over a 44-year period, the format and the contents changed with the time. Hence, it appeared desirable for the ADC to create a single, uniform catalog that would contain most of the information and could be accessed by right ascension as well as by declination. Most of the printed volumes are arranged by AG number. These numbers are retained with the addition of a two-letter abbreviation to indicate the AG volume from which the number is taken. Because some stars lack an AG number, a running number also has been added for each volume and it is the running number, preceded by the volume number, which is used for references to notes and other tables and files. The remaining volumes, in the far south, retain their original running numbers. Source References: Schlesinger, F., and Barney, I. 1939, Catalogue of 8101 Stars, -10 to -14 deg, Trans. Astron. Obs. The positions are derived from the Trans. Astron. Obs. Yale Univ. 9 but reduced to the FK3 system. c 25 The star is not in the Berlin B Catalog but was added to help fill sparse regions. No proper motions are given for these stars. The magnitude is from the BD. * 25 The proper motion is derived from the mean of the positions in Trans. Astron. Obs. Yale Univ. 10 and the AG2. T 30 The star is in the Bruce Proper Motion Survey and the GC and was used as a reference star. U 30 The star is in Luyten's Bruce Proper Motion Survey and was used as a reference star. M 31 More than one Melbourne Catalogue was used for proper motion reduction. P 31 The indicated large proper motion has not been confirmed in a search of other proper motion catalogues. M 322 A visual magnitude is not present in the Cape Photo graphic Catalogue (CPC) (Jackson and Stoy 1954 1958); it has been derived from the photographic magnitude and the color index. If both the magnitude and the color index are missing, the visual magnitude was constructed from the photographic magnitude and the spectral type. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note on f_ID: V = Star is in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (third edition), (Kukarkin 1969-70) B = The star is in both the WDS and the GCVS W = The star is present in the Washington Double Star Catalog (1984 edition) (Worley 1984) (WDS). If more than one star in this file has the same DM number and the star is in the WDS, both stars will have a W. Note on RAh, RAm, RAs, DE-, DEd, DEm, DEs, Ep: The coordinates on the B1950 system are given for the epoch, Ep. Proper motions must be applied to change the epoch. Note on Vmag: The visual magnitude as given in the printed catalogue or as derived from the photographic magnitude minus the color index. A magnitude of 30.0 indicates that the star is variable. Note on Pmag: The photographic magnitude as given in the published catalogue or as derived from the visual magnitude plus the color index. A magnitude of 30.0 indicates that the star is variable. Note on Sp: The spectral type as given in the printed volume. "Cmp" indicates that the spectrum is composite; additional information is usually given in the notes. If the number measured is less than 18, a zero fill is used for blank fields. Note on n_ID: For the vast majority of stars, the positions were derived directly in the reduction. For these stars, the field star code is "0". If the star appears on only one plate for which no reference position data are available, the position has been derived from the plate constants for the plate on which it appears (i.e., the classical method). For these stars, the field star code is "1". Note on n_pm: A = Proper motion taken directly from the CPC, because the star does not occur in the La Plata catalogs. This value is given only for convenience. It is not on the same system as the other proper motions. It should not be used in any statistical treatment of the material. B = The proper motion is derived from the difference between the Yale and La Plata positions. C = The proper motions are also derived from the difference between the Yale and the La Plata positions, but the latter is a mean of two values in overlapping zones. The epoch for the position is also the mean of those for the two zones. D = The La Plata position is from the NFK (Peters 1907) and is not on the system of the La Plata catalog. Thus, the proper motion is derived from the NFK and Yale positions. E = The star appears on both Yale (1942) and Sydney (1962) plates. The proper motion is from the difference in position between these plates. F = The proper motion is from the difference between the mean of the Yale and Sydney positions and the La Plata position. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: south.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 8 A8 --- ID Star number (see "Note on ID" section above) 9- 10 A2 --- cat *CP identifier 11- 18 A8 --- CP_no *CP number 19- 20 A2 --- cat_id [CDEM ]CD or ME catalog identifier 21- 28 A8 --- cat_no *CD or ME number 29- 33 F5.3 s e_RA ?Probable error in right ascension 34- 37 F4.2 arcsec e_DE ?Probable error in declination 38- 39 I2 --- o_im *Number of images 40- 41 I2 --- o_gim *?Number of grating images 42- 44 A3 --- r_pm *Source catalog for proper motions 45- 49 I5 --- pm_no ?Number in source catalog -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note on cat: The addendum gives the CD number and/or the CP or Melbourne Astrographic Catalogue number, signified by the letters "CP" in bytes 9-10, and "CD" or "ME" in bytes 19-20.
