ADC_Keywords: Stars, double and multiple Keywords: stars: binaries: visual - catalogs - astrometry Abstract: We report the discovery of 13251 visual double stars, mostly with separations between 0.3 and 1 arcsec, from a dedicated re-reduction of the Tycho data from the star mapper of the ESA Hipparcos satellite. The new doubles are combined with 18160 WDS systems identified in the Tycho-2 Catalogue, and 1220 new Tycho-2 doubles, to form the Tycho Double Star Catalogue, TDSC, a catalogue of absolute astrometry and BT, VT photometry for 66219 components of 32631 double and multiple star systems. We also include results for 32263 single components for systems unresolved in TDSC, and a supplement gives Hipparcos and Tycho-1 data for 4777 additional components. The TDS thus contains a total of 103259 entries. Cross identifications are given to WDS, HD, Hipparcos and Tycho-2 File Summary: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FileName Lrecl Records Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ReadMe 80 . When possible, the component designation is from the WDS. In cases where we have had to assign a component designation to a WDS system, or to a system not in WDS, we have normally assigned A,B,... according to the VT magnitude. Cases where our designations deviate from the WDS designations in a non-trivial way, are explained in the notes. Note (2): The main catalogue contains components detected in the Tycho-2 processing or in the new processing, while the supplement contains components copied across from the Tycho-2 Supplement. A system in TDSC may have components in both the main catalogue and in the supplement. Also note that a system known in the WDS may have just one component listed in the TDSC. Note (3): The position flag specifies the source of the right ascension and declination given here. ' ' = position copied from the Tycho-2 main catalogue 'N' = new Tycho position 'T' = Tycho-1 position from the Tycho-2 Supplement_1 'H' = Hipparcos position from the Tycho-2 Supplement_1 In the main catalogue only flags [ N] are used; in the supplement only flags [TH]. Note (4): The proper motion flag specifies the source of the proper motion given here. For close doubles which were not resolved in Tycho-2 or in the ground based catalogues used as first epoch for computing the proper motions, the Tycho-2 proper motions are assumed to represent the photocentre. For Hipparcos stars with no Tycho-2 proper motion, we give the Hipparcos proper motion instead. ' ' = Tycho-2 normal proper motion 'P' = Tycho-2 photocentre proper motion 'H' = Hipparcos proper motion 'X' = no proper motion Note (5): Except for Hp, the photometry is always on the same system as in Tycho-2. We expect the Tycho photometry of Hipparcos stars from Fabricius & Makarov (2000, Cat. J/A+A/356/141), to be more accurate than the normal Tycho-2 photometry. ' ' = normal photometry, either from Tycho-2 or new 'A' = normal photometry given here, but alternative photometry is given in Fabricius & Makarov (2000, Cat. J/A+A/356/141) 'F' = Tycho photometry from Fabricius & Makarov (2000, Cat. J/A+A/356/141) 'T' = Tycho photometry from Tycho-1 'B' = BT from Tycho-1, Hp is given instead of VT 'V' = VT from Tycho-1, no BT 'H' = Hp is given instead of VT, no BT In the main catalogue only flags [ A] are used; in the supplement only flags [FTBVH]. Note (6): The TYC1 is the GSC region number, TYC2 is the running number within the region, the TYC3 is a component identifier. TYC1 and TYC2 are copied from Tycho-2. Some new TYC3 numbers were constructed Note (7): The WDS contains a 10 character field with approximate ICRS coordinates for the primary component in the form hhmmm+ddmm. This field together with the component designation identifies the relevant entries of the WDS. Exceptions and ambiguities are explained in the notes. Note (8): Flag for a note, normally to the WDS identification. Some WDS identifications need clarification, e.g. because the WDS entry gives no designation or because the star has more than one WDS designation. In other cases the identification is somewhat uncertain; or we may have added new components to a known system. ' ' = no note 'A' = alternative WDS designation exists 'D' = dubious/uncertain WDS identification 'N' = a non-specific note 'O' = good quality orbit exists, cf Table 2 'R' = this WDS component is probably resolved 'S' = a close companion to a WDS component (probably) 'T' = a Tycho single star, added to a WDS system 'U' = undesignated in WDS (non-trivial) or unclear designation Notes [ANTU] are explained in detail in the file of notes. Note (9): Position angle and separation are computed at the mean observational epoch for the two stars, by applying proper motion to the right ascensions and declinations at the individual epochs of observation. The position angle is given relative to the ICRS pole. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte description of file: notes.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 5 I5 --- TDSC [1,65210]+= TDSC number for the system 7- 8 A2 --- m_TDSC Component designation 10- 10 A1 --- flag [ANTU] flag indicating the kind of note (1) 13- 80 A68 --- Note Text of the note -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note (1): Flags: 'A' = alternative WDS designation exists 'N' = a non-specific note 'T' = a Tycho single star, added to a WDS system 'U' = undesignated in WDS (non-trivial) or unclear designation --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
