Description:
The LSPM catalog is a comprehensive list of 61,977 stars north of the
J2000 celestial equator that have proper motions larger than 0.15"/yr
(local-background-stars frame). The catalog has been generated
primarily as a result of our systematic search for high proper motion
stars in the Digitized Sky Surveys using our SUPERBLINK software. At
brighter magnitudes, the catalog incorporates stars and data from the
Tycho-2 Catalogue (I/259) and also, to a lesser extent, from the
All-Sky Compiled Catalogue of 2.5million stars (ASCC-2.5, Cat. I/280).
The LSPM catalog considerably expands over the old Luyten (Luyten
Half-Second [LHS, Cat. I/87] and New Luyten Two-Tenths [NLTT, Cat.
I/98]) catalogs, superseding them for northern declinations. Positions
are given with an accuracy of ≲100 mas at the 2000.0 epoch, and
absolute proper motions are given with an accuracy of ∼8 mas/yr.
Corrections to the local-background-stars proper motions have been
calculated, and absolute proper motions in the extragalactic frame are
given. Whenever available, we also give optical BT and VT magnitudes
(from Tycho-2, ASCC-2.5), photographic BJ, RF, and IN magnitudes (from
USNO-B1 catalog, I/284), and infrared J, H, and Ks magnitudes (from
2MASS, Cat. II/246). We also provide an estimated V magnitude and V-J
color for nearly all catalog entries, useful for initial
classification of the stars. The catalog is estimated to be over 99%
complete at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>15°) and over 90%
complete at low Galactic latitudes (|b|>15°), down to a magnitude
V=19.0, and has a limiting magnitude V=21.0. All the northern stars
listed in the LHS and NLTT catalogs have been reidentified, and their
positions, proper motions, and magnitudes reevaluated. The catalog
also lists a large number of completely new objects, which promise to
expand very significantly the census of red dwarfs, subdwarfs, and
white dwarfs in the vicinity of the Sun.
All Luyten's NLTT stars north of the J2000 celestial equator that do
not appear in the LSPM catalog are given in table3, with an
explanation as to why they were not included in the LSPM catalog.

Note (1): Name based on J2000 position.
Note (2): NLTT catalog identification is the record number (recno)
in the original NLTT table (Cat. I/87)
Note (3): Original name of the star in the literature, as determined
from a search in the Simbad database. In the current version of the
catalog, OName is only given for stars that have no counterpart in
neither of the LHS, NLTT, HIP, Tycho-2, ASCC2.5, or UCAC2 catalogs,
and it is meant to distinguish, among stars with only an LSPM
identifier, those that have been reported previously in the
literature from those that are genuine, "new" discoveries.
Note (4): Relative proper motions, as calculated by the SUPERBLINK software.
This is the proper motion of the star measured relative to the mean
position of all objects within 4 arcminutes. Values are only provided
for stars detected by SUPERBLINK.
Note (5): Absolute proper motions, determined relative to a fixed
reference frame. The ICRS reference frame defined by Tycho-2/2MASS
positions is used. Absolute proper motions of stars detected by
SUPERBLINK are obtained by applying zonal corrections to the relative
proper motions. The local zonal correction vectors can be recovered by
comparing [pmRA,pmDE] to [rPMRA,rPMDE].
Note (6): the letters refer to the following sources:
A = ASCC-2.5 Catalog;
S = SUPERBLINK proper motion, 2MASS position;
T = Tycho-2 Catalog;
O = Other source.
Note (7): Optical magnitudes from the Tycho-2 and ASCC-2.5 catalog.
The B, V from Tycho-2 are obtained after a conversion from BT and
VT following the prescription of the introduction to the Hipparcos
and Tycho catalog. B and V magnitudes are extracted directly from the
ASCC-2.5, for stars that are not in the Tycho-2 catalog.
Note (8): Photographic photometry from the POSS-II plates.
All values are from the USNO-B1.0 catalog for stars with USNO-B1
identifications. Values for stars with no USNO-B1 identifications have
been calculated separately from Digitized Sky Survey scans.
Note (9): All values are from the 2MASS All-Sky Point Source Catalog.
Note (10): Optical V magnitude and optical-to-infrared V-J color
estimated for every star from available photometry. Stars with no
Tycho-2/ASCC-2.5 photometry have Ve estimated from the photographic
BJ and RF magnitudes. Stars with no 2MASS counterparts have their
V-Je estimated with the help of IN.

Note (1): NLTT catalog identification is the record number (recno)
in the original NLTT table (Cat. I/98)
Note (2): the letter means the following:
B = Object does not show up on POSS plates (bogus?);
D = Object is a duplicate of another NLTT star;
L = Object too slow according to NLTT catalog;
N = Object is a proper motion nebula;
S = Object too slow according to SUPERBLINK;
T = Object too slow according to Tycho-2 catalog.
Detailed explanations are in the "NLTT stars missing" section below.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NLTT stars missing in the LSPM catalog:
A flag value of "B" indicates that the star could not be found by
direct examination of the Digitized Sky Survey scans of the Palomar
Sky Survey (POSS) photographic plates. This means that an area 3
arcmin from the NLTT position was searched for signs of a moving
object, and none was found with a significant proper motion. The star
is suspected to be either a bogus NLTT entry, or to have a very large
error on its NLTT position. If the latter is true, then the object
most probably figures in the LSPM catalog as a "new" high proper
motion star. Corrected positions and proper motions are listed as
"0.0".
A flag value of "D" means that the object is a duplicate NLTT catalog
entry. The object exists, but is already accounted for under a
different NLTT catalog number. Corrected positions and proper motions
are listed as "0.0". A total of 38 stars in the table fall in this
category.
A flag value of "L" means that the star has an NLTT proper motion
under the nominal lower limit (0.15 arcsec per year) of the LSPM
catalog. Objects with this flag didn't have their proper motion
remeasured with SUPERBLINK, however. Only 3 stars in the table fall in
this category.
A flag value of "N" means that although the object was found to be
real, it is not a star but rather a proper motion nebula. The nebular
nature of the objects was confirmed from direct inspection of
Digitized Sky Survey images of POSS plate. This is the case for only 2
NLTT objects (NLTT 13414 and NLTT 13424).
A flag value of "S" means that the proper motion of the star was
remeasured by SUPERBLINK, and found to be under the nominal lower
limit (0.15 arcsec per year) of the LSPM catalog. Corrected positions
and proper motions are provided.
A flag value of "T" means that the star is in the Tycho-2 catalog, and
that its Tycho-2 proper motion is under the nominal lower limit (0.15
arcsec per year) of the LSPM catalog. Corrected positions and proper
motions are provided.
