Abstract:
The second release of the XMM OM Serendipitous Source Survey Catalogue
(XMM-SUSS2) was produced by processing the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor
(OM) data obtained from the beginning of the mission (2000) until the
end of 2012. The latest release, XMM-SUSS2.1, now includes an extra
year of data to the end of 2013. The data processing was performed at
the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC, Spain) and at Mullard Space
Science Laboratory (MSSL UCL, U.K.) by using the XMM Science Analysis
Software system (SAS) version 14.0. In addition to covering a larger
observation period, this release differs from the first release
(XMM-SUSS) by inclusion of all the OM observations (not only those
containing UV filters) and by performing source detection on stacked
images, thus facilitating the detection of fainter sources. The number
of observations (OBSIDs) included in the catalogue is 7,170. The total
number of entries included in the catalogue is 6,246,432. They
correspond to 4,329,363 sources, of which 831,582 have multiple
entries in the source table, corresponding to different observations.
Description:
The catalogue consists of two tables. The first one contains the
sources, with positional and photometric data (count rate, magnitude
and flux) and quality flags for each measurement. In the second table
we give a summary of the observations from which the sources have been
detected and measured.

Note (1): Sources are designated as "XMMOM JHHMMSS.s+DDMMSSa", conform to
the IAU Working Group on Designations (old IAU Commission 5). There are
over 1173 non-unique names. The last character is optional, and only
used to distinguish sources which otherwise would have the same name.
Note (2): the quality flags are expressed as a number, and also as a set of
the corresponding T/F (True/False) characters. The number is the sum
of numbers having the following meaning:
1 = source on a bad pixel
2 = source on a readout streak
4 = source on a smoke-ring
8 = source on a diffraction spike
16 = source affected by Mod-8 pattern
32 = source within the central enhancement
64 = source lies near a bright source
128 = source near the edge
256 = point source within an extended source
512 = very bight pixel within photometry aperture
1024 = multiple exposure values within photometry aperture
2048 = the source is too bright (rate>0.97ct/frame)
Note (3): the flag is 1 for an extended source and 0 for a point source.

History and notes:
The initially released version of the catalogue (ESAC) was done with the
source names like "XMMOM Jhhmmss.s+ddmmss" (the IAUNAME) for each source,
and was made available in that form. For version 1 and 2, in a few
instances multiple SOURCE IDs shared the same IAUNAME.
For the CDS release they will be distinguished by having a letter
x = a,b,c,etc., appended to their IAUNAME which becomes like
"XMMOM Jhhmmss.s+ddmmssa".
Sources brighter than 0.97 counts per frame have not been included. Their
coincidence loss is too large to correct for.
