ADC_Keywords: Surveys; Photometry, ugriz; Reddening Keywords: astronomical databases: miscellaneous ; catalogs ; cosmology: observations ; surveys ; techniques: image processing ; techniques: photometric Abstract: We describe the first public data release of the Dark Energy Survey, DES DR1, consisting of reduced single-epoch images, co-added images, co-added source catalogs, and associated products and services assembled over the first 3yr of DES science operations. DES DR1 is based on optical/near-infrared imaging from 345 distinct nights (2013 August to 2016 February) by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) mounted on the 4m Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. We release data from the DES wide-area survey covering ∼5000deg2 of the southern Galactic cap in five broad photometric bands, grizY. DES DR1 has a median delivered point-spread function of g=1.12, r=0.96, i=0.88, z=0.84, and Y=0.90" FWHM, a photometric precision of <1% in all bands, and an astrometric precision of 151mas. The median co-added catalog depth for a 1.95" diameter aperture at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)=10 is g=24.33, r=24.08, i=23.44, z=22.69, and Y=21.44mag. DES DR1 includes nearly 400 million distinct astronomical objects detected in ∼10000 co-add tiles of size 0.534deg2 produced from ∼39000 individual exposures. Benchmark galaxy and stellar samples contain ∼310 million and ∼80 million objects, respectively, following a basic object quality selection. DES DR1 constitutes the largest photometric data set to date at the achieved depth and photometric precision. Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis, 1998ApJ...500..525S 1998ApJ...500..525S), for an elliptical model based on the Kron radius. Note (2): Dereddened weighted average magnitude (using Schlegel, Finkbeiner and Davis, 1998ApJ...500..525S 1998ApJ...500..525S) from PSF fit single epoch detections. Note (3): Additive flag describing cautionary advice about source extraction process (SExtractor extraction flags). Use less than 4 for well behaved objects. Note (4): For co-add objects, if any pixel is masked in all of the contributing exposures for a given band, the IMAFLAGS_ISO=1 flag is set for that band. This flag is predominantly set for saturated objects and objects with missing data. We recommend a baseline quality criterion of IMAFLAGS_ISO=0 (in the relevant bands) for most science applications since the majority of flagged objects have unreliable photometry. Note (5): From elliptical growth-curve, modeled in 2 dimensions [pixel]. Note (6): Magnitude estimation, for an elliptical model based on the Kron radius. Note (7): Morphology based classifier based on comparison between a PSF versus exponential-PSF model. Values closer to 0 correspond to stars, larger values correspond to galaxies. Note (8): SPREAD_MODEL (http://sextractor.readthedocs.io/en/des_dr1/Model.html #model-based-star-galaxy-separation-spread-model) exhibits better performance than CLASS_STAR for morphological classification. Note (9): Magnitudes with errors >100mag have been set to NULL values by CDS. Note (10): "Infinite" values for WAVGSPREADMODEL g- and r-band haven been set to NULL values by CDS. Note (11): Errors calculated from SEXtractor; see the details in: http://sextractor.readthedocs.io/en/des_dr1/Position.html#poserr-iso-def -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History: Downloaded at: http://des.ncsa.illinois.edu/releases/dr1
