Description:
The catalogue includes all probable white dwarf and degenerate stars
found in the Proper Motion and Faint Blue Star Surveys conducted by
W.J. Luyten. The catalogue was originally published in two booklets,
one in 1970 (3035 entries), and the part II in 1977 (3511 entries).
As a guideline for the inclusion of stars into this catalogue, the
author has used stars which present minimal values of the
combined proper motions - magnitude quantity H defined by
H = m + 5 + 5 log µ (µ is the proper motion in arcsec/yr)
which show the minimal H values according to the color class:
b 13.5 f 15.5 g-k 17.7
a 14.4 g 17.0 k 18.3
with the following exceptions:
a) evidence from photoelectric colors or spectra indicate the
object is a degenerate star (e.g. LB 3303) or
b) the object is close to the antapex (which is the case for
many stars at alpha=21h and delta =+42°, plate 234).
The bluest stars (color classes b or a) will probably prove to be
genuine white dwarfs; probably no more than 40% of the yellower
objects (color class k) will prove to be genuine degenerates.

Note on LP: the number is made of the Palomar Sky Survey (PSS) plate
number, followed by a dash and a running number of the star within
the PSS plate area. For close stars, the number may be followed by
a letter (a, b or B)
Note on Rmag: the first white dwarf catalogue did not contain any value
for the red magnitude so a dummy value of 99.9 has been added for all
entries from the first catalogue.
Note on l_Pmag:
When objects are near the magnitude limit a plus ('+') sign was given
in the published catalogue in lieu of a value (e.g. LP 544-28 and LP
544-29 from the second volume of white dwarfs). For these cases a
greater than sign ('>') is given in this byte, otherwise blank.
Note on pm, pmPA:
The direction of the proper motion is measured from North Eastwards.
The RA and Dec components are:
pmRA.cos(Dec) = pm * sin(pmPA) and pmDec = pm * cos(pmPA)
Note on vSeq, vNo:
vNo indicates the volume (1 or 2) from which the entry was
originally published; the vSeq number ranges from 1 to 3035 for volume 1,
and from 1 to 3511 for volume 2.

History:
* April 1980 (from Theresa A. Nagy and Robert S. Hill, Systems and
Applied Sciences Corporation for NASA):
All of the data were keypunched, proofread and written onto magnetic
tape at the Goddard Space Flight Center.
Volume I has 2934 entries, according to its introduction; 99 entries
were added after the introduction had gone to press, making 3033
entries. However, the keypunching, proofreading, and computer checking
yielded 3035 entries. All entries were sorted according to right
ascension, though in the published version, the added group of 99
entries is separate.
White Dwarfs II has 3513 entries, according to its introduction.
However, the keypunching, proofreading, and computer checking yielded
3511 entries. Sequence (vSeq) and volume number (vNo) were added to
each entry.
The format of the entries from the Volume 1 was altered to make it
like the Volume 2: tenths of minute in RA were converted to seconds,
and a zero was inserted as tenth of arcminute in declination.
Two entries were altered:
a) LP 322-897 (vNo=2, vSeq=1966) with RA reported as 13 08.4
was converted to 13 08 24
b) BD-07 3632 (vNo=2, vSeq=2056) with RA reported as 13 27.40
was converted to 13 27 40

Two further errors were corrected:
=> LP 234-1664 (vNo=1, vSeq=2705) had a proper motion of 0.1arcsec
with an angle of 955 degrees; the values were corrected to
0.21 arcsec and 95 degrees, according to the proper motion survey
=> LP 587-9 (vNo=2, vSeq=288) indicates a proper motion angle of
412 degrees; its value was changed to 142 degrees, to be consistent
with LP.
The secondary names included in the remarks were added in the "Name"
column when possible, and the documentation was added.
