Description:
The table provides Hipparcos positions, Hipparcos & Tycho-2 proper
motions, and CORAVEL radial velocities for 6691 K and M giants in the
solar neighbourhood, mostly from the Hipparcos survey. A bayesian
maximum-likelihood approach has been used to derive the distances and
space velocities. New V-I indices, computed from a color
transformation based on Hp-VT2, are also provided. Spectroscopic
binaries have been identified as well. These data may be used to study
the kinematics of giant stars in the solar neighbourhood, and to
correlate it with their location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note (1): For 291 stars, null values in this and the following three
columns indicates that the Tycho-2 is not available or has not been
used in the analysis
Note (2): Values larger than about 2 hint at the possible binary nature
of the star
Note (3): For visual binaries (flag = 4 in column B), this colour index
has not been listed and a null value is given instead, because the Hp
magnitude appears to be a composite value for the two visual
components. For large amplitude variable stars, Hp-VT is meaningless
as well, and a null value has been listed.
Note (4): The duplicity flag has the following meaning:
* = no evidence for radial-velocity variations;
0 = spectroscopic binary (SB) with no orbit available;
1 = SB with orbit available (as listed in column Ref), or
center-of-mass (COM) velocity can be estimated; Column RV then
contains COM velocity;
2 = supergiant (sg) star, with intrinsic radial-velocity noise;
3 = uncertain case: either SB or sg
4 = visual binary with a companion less than 6" apart;
5-8 = as 0-3 but for a component of a visual binary;
9 = binary supergiant with an orbit available
The radial velocity contains the center-of-mass velocity for SBs
flagged 1 in column f_RV (the last column, Ref, provides then the
reference of the orbit used), and standard error (set to 0.3km/s in
the case of center-of-mass velocity). For SBs flagged 0 in column 24
(i.e. with no orbit available), average radial velocity and standard
error have been put to 0.
Note (5): Kinematic groups are numbered as follows:
1 = Y: stars with a young kinematics;
2 = HV: high-velocity stars;
3 = B: smooth background stars;
4 = HyPl: Hyades-Pleiades stream;
5 = Si: Sirius stream;
6 = He: Hercules stream
Note (6): The code 2005A&A.in.prep...J refers to the forthcoming paper
by Jorissen et al., 2005, devoted to the analysis of the binary
content of the present sample.
