Abstract:
Extensive optical and infrared photometry as well as low and high
resolution spectroscopy are used as inputs in deriving robust
estimates of the reddening, distance and nature of the progenitor of
V838 Mon, the 2002 outbursting event that produced a most spectacular
light-echo.

Note on table4.dat: Rest wavelengths at 5895.923, 5889.953 and 7698.979Å
for NaI D1, D2 and KI, respectively.
The nomenclature blue and red components refers to the broader line at
+37.7km/s and the narrower one at 65.1km/s, respectively, that compose
the profile of all interstellar lines, and that are well illustrated
by the NaI D1 line at the top of Figure 1 (superimposed on the wide
NaI P-Cyg stellar profile).
Note on photom.dat: The photometry was obtained with the USNO 1.0m
telescope and it is accurately placed on the Landolt's system of
equatorial standards. The astrometric coordinates are placed on the
USNO-B reference system.
