Abstract:
We identify optical counterparts, address uncertain identifications
and measure previously unknown redshifts of the host galaxies of
candidate Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources, and study
their stellar populations. Long slit spectroscopy and deep optical
imaging in the B, V and R bands, were obtained with the Very Large
Telescope.
Description:
The sample was observed during two nights (January 30 to 31, 2000, and
December 16 to 17, 2001) using VLT's FORS1/UT1 and FORS2/UT4.

Note (1): Individual notes:
B0914+114 : The optical coordinates correspond to the galaxy
previously - and incorrectly - identified as the
counterpart (see notes on individual source).
B0316+161 : magnitudes may be affected by close-by (∼3") objects.
Note (2): The radio positions are from the VLA calibrator manual (B0008-421,
B0316+161, B0742+103) and NED (B0407-658, B0554-026, B0904+039,
B0914+114).
Note (3): The typical uncertainties in the radio positions are 0.01" in
Declination and 0.001s in Right Ascension.
Note (4): The errors in the magnitudes are divided in the two components
photon noise (first error) and calibration error (second error).
