Description:
We present a uniform, large-scale survey of X-ray flare emission,
based on the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue and its
associated data products. Our survey comprises both XMM-targeted
active stars and those observed serendipitously in the field-of-view
of each observation. The 2XMM Catalogue and the associated time-series
('light-curve') data products have been used as the basis for the
survey of X-ray flares from cool stars in the Hipparcos Tycho-2
catalogue. Our sample contains ∼130 flares with well-observed
profiles; they originate from ∼70 stars.

Note (3): Variable, cool-star flag is:
1 = TRUE if considered to be a good, cool-star, variable detection in 2XMM
(i.e. in CVS sample)
0 = FALSE if in "low-variability" (CLVS) sample
Note (4): A unique number assigned to a group of 2XMM catalogue entries
(DetIDs) which are assumed to be the same source.
Note (5): Indicates if SRCID should be matched to another SRCID; relates to
high-proper-motion stars.
Note (6): Modified Julian Date (i.e. JD-2400000.5).
Note (7): M1_ONTIME if available, else M2_ONTIME, else PN_ONTIME; where
ca_ONTIME is the total good exposure time (after GTI filtering) for the
detection.
Note (8): min (PN_OFFAX, M1_OFFAX, M2_OFFAX); where ca_OFFAX is the off-axis
angle of the source in camera "ca".
Note (9): Instrument (PN, M1, M2) corresponding to the exposure with the
lowest variability chi-square probability.
Note (10): Summary "quality" flag for the detection, based on 2XMM SUM_FLAG,
but re-evaluated for present work as follows:
0 = good (2XMM SUM_FLAG)
1 = source parameters may be affected (2XMM SUM_FLAG)
3 = located in a area where spurious detection may occur (2XMM SUM_FLAG)
5 = optical loading
6 = counting-mode exposure problems
-3 = flag12=T
