ADC_Keywords: Stars, double and multiple ; Interferometry Keywords: binaries: general - binaries: visual - techniques: interferometric Abstract: The results of 3056 speckle interferometric observations of double stars, made with the 26 inch (66cm) refractor of the US Naval Observatory, are presented. Each speckle interferometric observation of a system represents a combination of over a thousand short-exposure images. These observations are averaged into 1675 mean relative positions and range in separation from 0.19" to 45.21", with a median separation of 2.99". This is the ninth in a series of papers presenting measures obtained with this system and covers the period 2002 January 1 through 2002 December 29. Included in these data are 28 older measures whose positions were previously deemed possibly aberrant but are no longer classified this way following a confirming observation. Nine of these systems have new orbital elements, which are presented here as well. Note (2): These low-quality observations may be due to one or more of the following parameters: close separation, large Δm, one or both components too faint, a large zenith distance, and poor seeing or transparency. They are included primarily because of either the confirming nature of the observation or the number of years since the last measured position. Note (3): Object notes as follows: C = Confirming observation. L = Linear elements determined (see Hartkopf et al., 2004, in prep.). 1 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1974 August 11, (Josties et al., 1974, PUSNO 22, Part 6), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 2 = Assigned the designation BU 997a by Burnham (1906BDS...C......0B 1906BDS...C......0B), despite being physically unrelated to BU 997. Redesignated BU 9001 to avoid ambiguity. 3 = See also Table 1. 4 = This pair of the complex system, known for some time, never had this pairing measured. 5 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1896 March 16, (Brown 1911, PUSNO 6, A117), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 6 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1896 March 14, (Brown 1911, PUSNO 6, A117), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 7 = This measure, made in 2000 was not included in Mason et al. (2001, Cat. J/AJ/122/1586), as the measure was inconsistent with previous measures. This measure confirms the large position change. 8 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1895 June 21, (Fredrickson, 1911, PUSNO 6, A117), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 9 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1895 July 31, (Fredrickson, 1911, PUSNO 6, A117), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 10 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1921 October 27, (Burton 1947, PUSNO, 2d Ser., 15, Part 4), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 11 = Large change in position since the last measure. 12 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1970 June 17, (Worley, 1972, PUSNO, 2d Ser., 22, Part 4), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 13 = This pair, first resolved with the 26 inch on 1895 September 15, (Fredrickson 1911, PUSNO 6, A117), was confirmed on this date in 2002. 50-181 = Number of years since last measure. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: table3.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 2 I2 h RAh Right ascension (J2000) 4- 7 F4.1 min RAm Right ascension (J2000) 9 A1 --- DE- Sign of the declination (J2000) 10- 11 I2 deg DEd Declination (J2000) 13- 14 I2 arcmin DEm Declination (J2000) 16- 28 A13 --- Disc Discoverer designation 30- 37 F8.3 yr Epoch ? However, available data are deemed insufficient for a new orbital calculation at this time. 2 = This measure was inconsistent with previous measures and so was not included in Mason et al., 2001, Cat. J/AJ/112/1586. The new orbit is listed in Table 5, ephemerides based on these elements are listed in Table 6, and the orbit is illustrated in Fig. 1. However, linear elements may prove to be a more accurate representation of the motion of this pair. 3 = This measure was inconsistent with previous measures and so was not included in Mason et al., 2001, Cat. J/AJ/112/1586. The new orbit is listed in Table 5, ephemerides based on these elements are listed in Table 6, and the orbit is illustrated in Fig. 1 or Fig. 2. 4 = This system was expected to show significant motion over the calendar year, so multiple observations have been obtained. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: table4.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 10 A10 --- WDS Name based on 2000 coordinates (HHMMm+DDMM) 12- 22 A11 --- Disc Discoverer designation 24- 27 I4 yr Date Observation year 29- 31 I3 deg PA Published position angle 33- 35 F3.1 arcsec rho Published separation 37- 40 F4.1 mag vmag1 Visual magnitude of the primary 42- 45 F4.1 mag vmag2 Visual magnitude of the secondary -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: table5.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 10 A10 --- WDS Name based on 2000 coordinates (HHMMm+DDMM) 12- 22 A11 --- Disc Discoverer designation 24- 27 I4 yr Per Period 29- 32 F4.2 arcsec a Semi-major axis 34- 36 I3 deg i Inclination angle 38- 40 I3 deg Omega Longitude of the ascending node 42- 45 I4 yr T0 Time of perihelion passage 47- 50 F4.2 --- e Eccentricity 52- 54 I3 deg omega Longitude of perihelion 56 I1 --- Grade [1/5] Grade (1) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note (1): 1 = definitive to 5 = indeterminate (see Hartkopf et al., 2001AJ....122.3472H 2001AJ....122.3472H) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History: From electronic version of the journal 27-Dec-2005: References standardized in table3 References: Douglass et al., Paper I 1997ApJS..111..289D 1997ApJS..111..289D Germain et al., Paper II 1999AJ....117.1905G 1999AJ....117.1905G, Cat.
