Abstract:
We present a spectroscopic survey of 2079 red giant stars, distributed
over the central 4kpcx2kpc of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). After
fitting and removing a small velocity gradient across the SMC
(8.3km/s/° oriented at 23.4° east of north), we measure an rms
velocity scatter of 27.5±0.5km/s.
Description:
We select candidate RGB stars photometrically from our Magellanic
Clouds Photometric Survey (MCPS) catalog, which contains subarcsecond
astrometry and UBVI photometry for over 6 million SMC stars (Zaritsky
et al. 2002, Cat. J/AJ/123/855). Our 16 selected fields cover the
central 3.9x1.8kpc2 of the SMC. We observed 14 of our 16 fields over
four half-nights on the Magellan Baade Telescope from 2004 August 29
to September 1.

Note (1): Three red giants in Lindsay 11 were observed by Da Costa &
Hatzidimitriou (1998AJ....115.1934D 1998AJ....115.1934D) and have a different format
(MJD_182, MJD_212, MJD_240).
Note (2): Status flag defined as follows:
1 = Lindsay 11 giant observed by Da Costa & Hatzidimitriou
(1998AJ....115.1934D 1998AJ....115.1934D), in this case the column [HZ2006b]
has a different format (MJD_NNN);
2 = Foreground star.
