Abstract:
A detailed imaging analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of the
Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594) has been accomplished using a six-image
mosaic from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys.
The quality of the data is such that contamination by foreground stars
and background galaxies is negligible for all but the faintest 5% of
the GC luminosity function. This enables the study of an effectively
pure sample of 659 GCs until ∼2mag fainter than the turnover
magnitude, which occurs at MTOMV=-7.60±0.06 for an assumed
m-M=29.77. Two GC metallicity subpopulations are easily
distinguishable, with the metal-poor subpopulation exhibiting a
smaller intrinsic dispersion in color compared to the metal-rich
subpopulation.
Description:
The Hubble Heritage Project sponsored a six-pointing, ACS mosaic of
the Sombrero galaxy (principal investigator: K. Noll, HST PID 9714).
Each pointing consisted of 4x675s exposures with the F435W (B)
filter, 4x500s with the F555W (V) filter, and 4x350s with the
F625W (R) filter.

Note (1): Since the photometric transformations to the standard systems
depend on an object's color, the band magnitudes were derived twice
using the two relevant colors. Differences between the same bands for
a given object were infrequent and varied by no more than 0.03mag.
The B and V magnitudes presented here were derived from B-V colors
and R was from B-R.
Note (2): A distance modulus of 29.77 is assumed. See text for derivation.
