Abstract:
We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS images and color-magnitude
diagrams for 24 nearby galaxies in and near the constellation of
Centaurus with radial velocities VLG<550km/s. Distances are
determined based on the luminosities of stars at the tip of the red
giant branch that range from 3.0 to 6.5Mpc. The galaxies are
concentrated in two spatially separated groups around Cen A (NGC 5128)
and M83 (NGC 5236).
Description:
We have observed 24 galaxies with the Advanced Camera for Surveys
(ACS) during HST Cycles 12 and 13 (proposals 9771 and 10235).

Note (1): Following the Catalog of Neighboring Galaxies (Karachentsev et
al., 2004, Cat. J/AJ/127/2031, CNG): for every galaxy "i" we found
its "main disturber" (=MD), producing the highest tidal action
Θi = max{log(Mk/Dik3)} + C (i = 1, 2... N)
where Mk is the total mass of any neighboring potential MD galaxy
(proportional to its luminosity with M/LB=10M☉/L☉)
separated from the considered galaxy by a space distance Dik; the
value of the constant C is chosen so that Θ=0 when the Keplerian
cyclic period of the galaxy with respect to its MD equals the cosmic
Hubble time, 1/H0; therefore positive values correspond to galaxies
in groups, while the negative ones correspond to isolated galaxies.
Note (2): Method as follows:
cep = Cepheids
rgb = tip of RGB
sbf = surface brightness fluctuations
mem = probable membership in the known groups
h = radial velocity with the global Hubble constant H0=72km/s/Mpc
(Freedman et al., 2001ApJ...553...47F 2001ApJ...553...47F).
