Abstract:
We present the results of high angular resolution adaptive optics (AO)
near-infrared (JHKs) observations of the deeply embedded massive
cluster RCW 38 using NACO on the Very Large Telescope. Narrowband AO
observations centered at wavelengths of 1.28um, 2.12um, and 2.17um
were also obtained. The area covered by these observations is about
0.5pc2, centered on the O-star RCW 38 IRS 2. We use the JHKs colors
to identify young stars with infrared (IR) excess in this region.
Description:
High angular resolution near-IR imaging of RCW 38 was performed on
2003 February 20 and 2003 February 23 using NAOS-CONICA (NACO) at
Yepun, one of the 8.2m unit telescopes of the VLT installed at the
European Southern Observatory's (ESO) site on Cerro Paranal, Chile.
In order to estimate the degree of background contamination, a control
field (J. Ascenso 2008, private communication) was imaged on 2005 June
17 in the J, H, and Ks passbands using the SOFI (Son of ISAAC) on the
New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile.
