Abstract:
Using light curves from the HATNet survey for transiting extrasolar
planets we investigate the optical broad-band photometric variability
of a sample of 27, 560 field K and M dwarfs selected by color and
proper-motion (V-K≳3.0, mu>30mas/yr, plus additional cuts in
J-H vs. H-Ks and on the reduced proper motion). We apply a
variety of variability selection algorithms on the light curves to
search for periodic and quasi-periodic variations, and for
large-amplitude, long-duration flare events. To set the selection
thresholds we conduct Monte Carlo simulations of light curves with
realistic noise properties.
Description:
The survey was conducted using the Hungarian-made Automated Telescope
Network (HATNet) of small aperture robotic telescopes located in
Arizona and Hawaii. The AoV, AoVHarm (AH), BLS and DACF algorithms
were used to search for periodic variable stars, a total of 3418
candidate variables are included in the primary catalog. A separate
search for flare events was conducted.

Note (1): AH, EPD and TFA definitions:
AH = the Analysis of Variance period-finder using a harmonic series.
EPD = light curves have had External Parameter Decorrelation applied
to remove trends that correlate with hour angle, star position,
etc., but have not had additional trend filtering applied.
TFA = light curves have had both EPD and the Trend Filtering Algorithm
applied. Note that TFA light curves will generally have fewer
false alarm detections, but the measured amplitude of a real
signal may be systematically lower than for the EPD light curves.
Note (2): Note that an amplitude may be undefined even if a period was
detected if the EPD or TFA light curve in the I or R band is
unavailable for the target, or if the amplitude finding routine
failed to converge. Amplitudes are peak-to-peak.
Note (3): Quality flag as follows:
0 = ok. The distinction between an ok detection and a questionable
detection is subjective.
1 = questionable detection. The distinction between an ok detection
and a questionable detection is subjective.
2 = no detection

0 = unblended
1 = unlikely blend
