Abstract:
Dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) are a subset of high-redshift (z∼2)
optically-faint ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, e.g.,
LIR>1012L☉). We present new far-infrared photometry, at 250,
350, and 500µm (observed-frame), from the Herschel Space
Telescope for a large sample of 113 DOGs with spectroscopically
measured redshifts. Approximately 60% of the sample are detected in
the far-IR. The Herschel photometry allows the first robust
determinations of the total infrared luminosities of a large sample of
DOGs, confirming their high IR luminosities, which range from
1011.6L☉<LIR(8-1000µm)<1013.6L☉. 90% of the
Herschel-detected DOGs in this sample are ULIRGs and 30% have
LIR>10^13L☉. The rest-frame near-IR (1-3µm) spectral
energy distributions (SEDs) of the Herschel-detected DOGs are
predictors of their SEDs at longer wavelengths.
Description:
In this paper, we investigate the optical through far-IR SEDs of 113
DOGs with known spectroscopic redshifts that lie in the Herschel
fields. We measure the far-IR flux densities from the Herschel SPIRE
observations.
The sample of dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) is taken from the Bootes
field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS; Jannuzi & Dey,
1999ASPC..191..111J 1999ASPC..191..111J). This field, roughly 9deg2 in area, was
observed with Spitzer/MIPS at 24um. The field also has deep optical
imaging in the BW, R, I, and K bands to depths of 27.1, 26.1, 25.4,
and 19.0mag (Vega), respectively. Moderately deep Spitzer/IRAC imaging
at 3.5, 4.6, 5.8, 8.0um was obtained for the entire field (Eisenhardt
et al., 2004ApJS..154...48E 2004ApJS..154...48E) and augmented by the Spitzer Deep
Wide-Field Survey (SDWFS; Ashby et al. 2009, Cat. J/ApJ/701/428
superseded by Cat. J/ApJ/716/530).
The Bootes field has been observed at longer wavelengths with Herschel
Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) at 250, 350, and
500µm as part of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey
(HerMES) collaboration (Oliver et al., 2012MNRAS.424.1614O 2012MNRAS.424.1614O). First
observation was carried out on 2009 September 12.

Note (2): The photometry achieves a 20% precision at roughly 20, 20, and 25mJy
(for the 250, 350, and 500µm images, respectively).
Note (3): Type is one of:
PL = "Power-law" sources with a rising spectral energy distribution (SED)
across the Spitzer IRAC bands.
Bump = "Bump" sources with a peak or break in their spectral energy
distribution (SED) across the IRAC bands.
Note (4): Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the dust-obscured galaxies
(DOGs) are compared to templates of three local ultra-luminous infrared
galaxies (ULIRGs) that range from active galactic nucleus (AGN)
dominated to star formation dominated, including:
Mrk 231, NGC 6240, and Arp 220.
