Abstract:
This paper discusses the optical spectroscopic properties of the IRAS
1Jy sample (f60>1Jy) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs:
LIR>1012L_☉; H0=75km/s/Mpc and q0=0). One hundred eight of
the 118 1Jy ULIGs have been observed at Δλ=8.3Å
resolution over the wavelength range ∼4500-8900Å. These data are
combined with large, previously published sets of optical
spectroscopic data of lower luminosity infrared galaxies to look for
systematic trends with infrared luminosity over the luminosity range
LIR∼1010.5-1013L☉.

Note (6): The emission-line fluxes are normalized to the observed flux
of narrow Hα. In Seyfert 1 galaxies (see Table 5), the Hα
flux, equivalent width, and luminosity refer to the sum of the narrow
and broad components of Hα.
The uncertainty on the relative flux ratios is typically of 5%-10%,
and colons indicate values with relative uncertainties of 20%-30%.
Double colons indicate values with relative uncertainties larger than
30%, and these objects were not considered in the analysis because of
the large uncertainties in the data. The typical uncertainty on the
absolute Hα fluxes is 25%-50%.
