Abstract:
A Chandra observation of the intermediate-luminosity (MB=-20)
elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 resolves 75% of the X-ray emission within
the central 5kpc into point sources. Spectral analysis of the
remaining unresolved emission within the central 770pc indicates that
90% of the emission probably arises from undetected point sources,
while 10% arises from thermal emission from kT=0.6keV gas.
Description:
NGC 3379 was observed by Chandra for 33744s on 2001 February 13,
with the ACIS-S detector in faint telemetry mode.

Note (1): The soft X-ray color is computed from H1=(M-S)/(S+M+H) and the hard
X-ray color from H2=(H-M)/(S+M+H), where S, M, H are the number of
counts in all three bands: soft band from 0.3 to 1.0keV, medium band
from 1.0 to 2.0keV, and hard band from 2.0 to 8.0keV (respectively).
Hardness ratios are only given for sources detected at greater than
4σ.
