Abstract:
We present the results of extensive multi-frequency monitoring of the
radio galaxy 3C 111 between 2004 and 2010 at X-ray (2.4-10keV),
optical (R band), and radio (14.5, 37, and 230GHz) wave bands, as well
as multi-epoch imaging with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at
43GHz. Over the six years of observation, significant dips in the
X-ray light curve are followed by ejections of bright superluminal
knots in the VLBA images. This shows a clear connection between the
radiative state near the black hole, where the X-rays are produced,
and events in the jet. The X-ray continuum flux and Fe line intensity
are strongly correlated, with a time lag shorter than 90 days and
consistent with zero.
Description:
The X-ray light curves are based on observations of 3C 111 with the
Proportional Counter Array (PCA) detector of the Rossi X-Ray Timing
Explorer (RXTE) from 2004 March to 2010 April (tables 2, 3, and 4).
We monitored 3C 111 in the optical R band over a portion of the time
span of the X-ray observations. The majority of the measurements in
the R band are from the 2m Liverpool Telescope at La Palma, Canary
Islands, Spain, supplemented by observations at the 1.8m Perkins
Telescope of Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ (table 5).
We monitored the 14.5GHz flux of 3C 111 with the 26m antenna of the
University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory. We have compiled a
37GHz light curve with data from the 13.7m telescope at Metsahovi
Radio Observatory, Finland. We have also compiled a 230GHz light
curve of 3C 111 over a portion of the time span of the X-ray
observations with calibration data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA)
(tables 6, 7 and 8).
