The observations were carried out using the NOAO Extremely Wide-Field Infrared Imager (NEWFIRM) on the Mayall 4m Telescope on Kitt Peak as part of the NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey (NMBS), an NOAO survey program. In this paper, we describe the full details of the observations, data reduction, and photometry for the survey. We also present a public K-selected photometric catalog, along with accurate photometric redshifts. The redshifts are computed with 37 (20) filters in the COSMOS (AEGIS) fields, combining the NIR medium-bandwidth data with existing UV (Galaxy Evolution Explorer), visible and NIR (Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and Subaru Telescope), and mid-IR (Spitzer/IRAC) imaging. We find excellent agreement with publicly available spectroscopic redshifts, with σz/(1+z)∼1%-2% for ∼4000 galaxies at z=0-3. The NMBS catalogs contain ∼13000 galaxies at z>1.5 with accurate photometric redshifts and rest-frame colors. Due to the increased spectral resolution obtained with the five NIR medium-band filters, the median 68% confidence intervals of the photometric redshifts of both quiescent and star-forming galaxies are a factor of about two times smaller when comparing catalogs with medium-band NIR photometry to NIR broadband photometry. Description: The survey targets two ∼0.21deg2 fields within COSMOS (Scoville 2007ASPC..375..166S 2007ASPC..375..166S) and the All-wavelength Extended Groth strip International Survey (AEGIS; Davis et al. 2007ApJ...660L...1D 2007ApJ...660L...1D), chosen to take advantage of the wealth of publicly available ancillary data over a broad wavelength range (see section 3.6). The NEWFIRM 27.6'x27.6' pointing within the COSMOS field is centered at RA=9:59:53.3, DEC=+02:24:08 (J2000). This pointing overlaps with the zCOSMOS deep redshift survey (Lilly et al. 2007, Cat. J/ApJS/172/70) and the upcoming Ultra-VISTA survey. The pointing in the AEGIS field is centered at RA=14:18:00, DEC=+52:36:07 (J2000). The observations were carried out with Mayall using the NOAO Extremely Wide-Field Infrared Imager (NEWFIRM) camera with the J1 (1.048um), J2 (1.190um), J3 (1.284um), H1 (1.556um), and H2 (1.710um) medium-bandwidth filters and the K broadband filter. Data were taken over the 2008A, 2008B, and 2009A semesters, for a total of 75 nights. We obtained a total on-sky integration time between 17 and 31hr in each filter in each field over the three semesters. Fluxes in all bands are measured in fixed 1.5" diameter apertures in the AEGIS-N2 and COSMOS-1 fields, from the PSF- and astrometrically- matched images, including zero point offsets. All fluxes are converted to total with an aperture correction and normalized to an AB zeropoint of 25, such that: magAB=-2.5*log10(flux)+25.0 (flux unit is 0.3631uJy) Construction of the catalog: The survey catalog combines the data taken with the NEWFIRM camera with publicly available optical ugriz broadband images of both survey fields from the Deep Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS), using image versions reduced by the CARS team (Erben et al. 2009A&A...493.1197E 2009A&A...493.1197E; Hildebrandt et al. 2009A&A...498..725H 2009A&A...498..725H), and JHKs broadband imaging from the WIRCam Deep Survey (WIRDS; McCracken et al. 2010ApJ...708..202M 2010ApJ...708..202M; R. Bielby et al. 2010A&A...523A..66B 2010A&A...523A..66B and 2012A&A...545A..23B 2012A&A...545A..23B). Additionally, we include deep Subaru Telescope images with the BJ, VJ, r+, i+, and z+ broadband filters and 12 medium-band filters in the COSMOS field (Taniguchi et al. 2007ApJS..172....9T 2007ApJS..172....9T; Y. Taniguchi et al. 2009ApJ...701..915T 2009ApJ...701..915T). We include mid-IR images in the Spitzer/IRAC bands over the entire COSMOS pointing that are provided by the S-COSMOS survey (Sanders et al. 2007ApJS..172...86S 2007ApJS..172...86S), and partial coverage of the AEGIS pointing (∼0.15deg2) overlapping with the Extended Groth Strip (EGS; Barmby et al. 2008, Cat. J/ApJS/177/431). The catalogs include Spitzer/MIPS fluxes at 24um that are derived from images provided by the S-COSMOS and Far-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy surveys, with the same coverage as the IRAC data. Finally, we incorporate near-UV (NUV) and Far-UV (FUV) Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX; Martin et al. 2005ApJ...619L...1M 2005ApJ...619L...1M) data in both fields from the Multimission Archive at the Space Telescope Science Institute into the catalogs (see also Zamojski et al. 2007ApJS..172..468Z 2007ApJS..172..468Z for a description of the COSMOS GALEX data). in arcsec of the color aperture, total aperture, and total correction applied to the color aperture flux to convert to total flux. Note (G2): A flag that indicates if any of the IRAC or GALEX photometry has a contamination ratio >50% in any of the bands. (1 = >50% in at least 1 band, 0 = OK). Note (G3): In section 4.5, the method used to deblend the photometry of the single "parent" object into its constituent "children", based on the technique described by Lupton et al. (2001ASPC..238..269L 2001ASPC..238..269L) is detailed. Note (G4): A standard selection of galaxies can be obtained by selecting use=1, which is equivalent to wmin>0.3 and star Flag=0. Note (G5): the contamination is defined as the ratio of the flux in neighboring objects removed to the "cleaned flux" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History: Copied at http://www.astro.yale.edu/nmbs/Data_Products.html References: van Dokkum et al.
