Abstract:
We make a comprehensive study of H I absorption toward H II regions
located within |l|<10°. Structures in the extreme inner Galaxy are
traced using the longitude-velocity space distribution of this
absorption. We find significant H I absorption associated with the
Near and Far 3kpc Arms, the Connecting Arm, Bania's Clump 1, and the
HI Tilted Disk. We also constrain the line-of-sight distances to H II
regions, by using H I absorption spectra together with the H II region
velocities measured by radio recombination lines.
Description:
Radio continuum maps were sourced from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS;
Condon et al. 1998, VIII/65) and the Southern Galactic Plane Survey
(SGPS; McClure-Griffiths et al. 2005ApJS..158..178M 2005ApJS..158..178M).
HI absorption spectra were extracted from the two SGPS data sets
(5<|l|<10) and the ATCA HIGCS (5<|l|; McClure-Griffiths et al.
2012ApJS..199...12M 2012ApJS..199...12M). Observations for the SGPS (I and II) and ATCA
HIGCS were performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA)
and supplemented with data from the Parkes Radio Telescope.
The Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey (GBTHRDS;
Anderson et al. 2011, J/ApJS/194/32) covered 343<l<67 and detected
radio recombination lines (RRLs) from 448 new HII regions and included
a catalog of known HII region as of 2010.
