Abstract:
We investigate spectroscopic properties of galaxy systems identified
based on deep X-ray observations in the Cosmic Evolution Survey
(COSMOS) field. The COSMOS X-ray system catalog we use includes 180
X-ray systems to a limiting flux of 1.0x10-15erg/cm2/s, an order
of magnitude deeper than the future e-ROSITA survey. We identify
spectroscopic members of these X-ray systems based on the
spectroscopic catalog constructed by compiling various spectroscopic
surveys including 277 new measurements; 146 X-ray systems are
spectroscopically identified groups with more than three spectroscopic
members. We identify 2196 spectroscopic redshifts of member candidates
in these X-ray systems. The X-ray luminosity (LX)-velocity
dispersion (σv) scaling relation of the COSMOS X-ray systems
is consistent with that of massive X-ray clusters. One of the
distinctive features of the COSMOS survey is that it covers the X-ray
luminosity range where poor groups overlap the range for extended
emission associated with individual quiescent galaxies. We assess the
challenges posed by the complex morphology of the distribution of
systems with low X-ray luminosity, including groups and individual
quiescent galaxies, in the Lx-σv plane.
Description:
We use the COSMOS Galaxy and X-ray Group Membership Catalog
(George+ 2011, J/ApJ/742/125) as the basis of our study. This catalog
includes 115844 galaxies with mF814<24.2 (MAG_AUTO) from the COSMOS
Advanced Camera for Survey catalog (Leauthaud+ 2007ApJS..172..219L 2007ApJS..172..219L).
We match this COSMOS galaxy catalog to the UltraVISTA photometric
catalog (Muzzin+ 2013, J/ApJS/206/8) to obtain optical photometry of
the galaxies. We supplement galaxy magnitudes using the COSMOS
photometry catalog (Capak+ 2007, II/284).
We use spectroscopy to determine the membership of the COSMOS X-ray
systems. We first compile spectroscopic redshifts from several surveys
covering the COSMOS field (Section 2.2.1).
In addition, we carried out spectroscopic observations to obtain
additional redshifts in the field.
We carried out new MMT/Hectospec observations for the COSMOS field in
2018 December in the wavelength range 3800-9100Å.
See Section 2.2.2.
We identify 2196 spectroscopic members in 176 COSMOS X-ray systems.
