Abstract:
This paper continues kinematical investigation of the Hipparcos visual
binaries with known orbits. A sample, consisting of 804 binary systems
with orbital elements determined from ground-based observations, is
selected. The mean relative error of their parallaxes is about 12% and
the mean relative error of proper motions is about 4%. However, even
41% of the sample stars lack radial velocity measurements. The
computed Galactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters
are used to divide the stars with known radial velocities into
kinematical age groups. The majority (92%) of binaries from the sample
are thin disk stars, 7.6% have thick disk kinematics and only two
binaries have halo kinematics. Among them, the long-period variable
Mira Ceti has a very discordant Hipparcos and ground-based parallax
values. From the whole sample, 60 stars are ascribed to the thick disk
and halo population. There is an urgent need to increase the number of
the identified halo binaries with known orbits and substantially
improve the situation with radial velocity data for stars with known
orbits.
Based on the data from the Hipparcos astrometry satellite (ESA)
Description:
The sample, consisting of 804 Hipparcos visual binary systems with
known orbits which were determined from ground-based observations and
not analyzed in Paper I (Bartkevicius and Gudas, 2001, Cat.
J/BaltA/10/481), is selected from the Fifth Catalog of Orbits
of Visual Binary Stars (Hartkopf et al., 2000). Hipparcos catalogue
number, the identification of the star in other catalogues, the
equatorial coordinates for 2000.0, the magnitude V, the color index
B-V for the combined light of the system, and a spectral type are
taken from the Hipparcos Celestia Catalogue (ESA 1998, Cat. I/239).
The trigonometric parallaxes are compiled from the Hipparcos Celestia
Catalogue . For several stars the improved Hipparcos results are used
and the dynamical parallaxes are also calculated. The mean relative
error of the weighted mean parallaxes is about 12%. For the bulk of
the stars proper motions are taken from the Hipparcos and Tycho-2
catalogues. The average relative error of the weighted means of proper
motion is about 4%. Radial velocities for 474 stars are compiled from
several radial velocity catalogues. The mean value of the standard
error of the sample is about 2.5km/s. 330 (41%) of the stars belonging
to the sample lack radial velocity determinations. The computed
galactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters are used
to divide the stars into kinematical age groups.
