The radial extent of the cluster is found to be ∼10arcmin (2.9pc). The interstellar extinction in the cluster region varies between E(B-V)=1.4 to 1.8mag. The ratio of total-to-selective extinction in the cluster region is estimated as 3.7±0.3. The distance of the cluster is found to be 1.00±0.05kpc. Using near-infrared (NIR) colours and slitless spectroscopy, we have identified young stellar objects (YSOs) in the open cluster Be 59 region. The Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) and IRAS-HIRES images around the cluster region are also used to study the emission from unidentified infrared bands and to estimate the spatial distribution of optical depth of warm and cold interstellar dust. Description: The CCD UBV Ic observations of the cluster were obtained using the 105-cm Schmidt telescope of the Kiso Observatory on 2001 November 19-21. The observations were also carried out in slitless mode with a grism as the dispersing element using the Himalayan Faint Object Spectrograph Camera (HFOSC) instrument at the 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) on 2004 September 22 and 2005 January 7-9.
