Using Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) and other data, we show that there is an additional dependence on the global characteristics of their host galaxies: events of the same light-curve shape and colour are, on average, 0.08mag (∼4.0σ) brighter in massive host galaxies (presumably metal-rich) and galaxies with low specific star formation rates (sSFR). Description: The high-redshift SN Ia data are taken from the SNLS. This programme used optical imaging data taken as part of the deep component of the five-year Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHT-LS) using the square-degree 'MegaCam' camera, located in the prime focus environment 'MegaPrime' on the CFHT.
