Description:
The SKYMAP Star Catalog System consists of a Master Catalog stellar
database and a collection of utility software designed to create and
maintain the database and to generate derivative mission star catalogs
(run catalogs). It contains an extensive compilation of information on
almost 300000 stars.
Introduction:
The original SKYMAP Master Catalog was generated in the early 1970's.
Incremental updates and corrections were made over the following years
but the first complete revision of the source data occurred with
Version 4.0. This revision also produced a unique, consolidated source
of astrometric information which can be used by the astronomical
community. The derived quantities were removed and wideband and
photometric data in the R (red) and I (infrared) systems were added.
This version, the most recent, is discussed in detail in sky.txt.
Confer.txt describes these upgrades in detail. There are some
deficiencies that exist in the SKY2000 Master Catalog that we are
aware of. These items will be researched and corrected in future
SKY2000 Master Catalog releases. (See "Kwon Deficiencies" below)

1. indicates this the brighter component of a system with a companion
≥ 0.3 mag.
2. indicates this is the fainter component of a system with a companion
≤ 0.3 mag. fainter e

lower of the two.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known Deficiencies in SKY2000 Master Catalog:
1. Possible incompleteness of HD, PPM and WDS identifiers.
2. Some composite spectrum stars (stars having 2 consecutive HD numbers)
are listed with separate entries instead of a single entry with the
lower HD number and a 9 code after it.
3. The position uncertainties are presently based on mean epochs of the
source catalogs propagated to the year 2000. The actual uncertainties
will be individually computed and put into a future version.
4. The sources for MK spectral types are not complete and often refer
back to a previous version of the Master Catalog. Improved data may
exist for MK spectral types with source 98.
5. Photoelectric data from sources 25 and 26 have assigned errors that
are not appropriate. Assigned errors from all other sources except
source 20 may not be appropriate. Magnitudes and colors in in the
photoelectric data fields taken from sources 94 and 95 may not be
photoelectric.
6. Orbital information for physical binary systems has not been
incorporated into the catalog yet.
7. Double star components are not always correctly assigned and/or are
missing.
8. Photovisual (ptv) and photographic (ptg) magnitudes are incomplete.
Approximately 4% of entries do not have either a ptv or a ptg.
9. Maximum and minimum magnitudes for variable stars have not been
incorporated into the catalog.
10. Possible duplicates for DM supplemental stars (stars with 'a' or 'b'
appended to the DM identifier).
11. Some HD numbers have 1's or 2's appended that may not be consistent
with other component identifiers.
12. Incomplete data in the variable star designations.
13. V magnitude data from sources 24 and 28 may not be correct
(approximately 0.01% of Master Catalog entries).
14. Colors computed from magnitudes originating from different sources may
be inconsistent.
15. Some proper motion sources are not consistent with the position
sources.
16. The precision of some magnitude data is not consistent with the
accuracy (zeroes are appended).
