Description:
This Catalogue is an update to Helen Sawyer Hogg's Third Catalogue on
Variable Stars in Globular Clusters (1973, David Dunlap Observatory
Publications, Volume 3, Number 6). This update is based mainly on
reference cards prepared by Helen Sawyer Hogg from articles published
in the literature in the period 1973 to 1988. There are also some
references entered from more recent literature and we are attempting
to bring the catalogue up to date.
Not all known globular clusters have been included, as the literature
search is not at this point complete.

Note on clusterID:
The name of the file indicates the IAU cluster name, in the format
C####p### or C####m###, where the "p" and "m" indicate plus or minus,
as there may be difficulty in naming files with "-" or "+" on host
systems.
Note on Epoch:
There is some uncertainty about the reliability of the epoch values.
Use them with caution. A future update will resolve this issue.

note (1): The visual magnitude data were originally given in mean V
and amplitude but were converted to fit in the table. See the
original data file on the object.
note (2): Epoch is the time of maximum for RR Lyrae and XX PHe and
minimum for the EW variables.
note(3): Not the maximum and minimum visual amplitudes, but mean(B) and

Organization of the information in file byclustr.txt:
This data file is the original data from the author, and organized by
cluster. The file format is first some information about the cluster
(which has been put in table clusters.dat), then the table of the
variables' properties (see the table variabls.dat), followed by notes
about the data (see notes.dat) and references (see references.dat).
The extracted tabular data hopefully will make searches easier to do.
Please note that not all known globular clusters have been included,
as the literature search is not at this point complete. At the
beginning of the file is a header containing the cluster name, with
multiple designations shown if they are in common use. Following are
the RA and Dec of the cluster. The RA and Dec are the 1950 coordinates
unless otherwise noted. This is followed by a listing of any known
variables in or around the cluster. This section will be discussed in
more detail elsewhere. Following the variable star listing is a
bibliographical listing of papers related to the cluster. Brief notes
accompany each reference to aid in locating the information desired.
The bibliographical references are sorted approximately
chronologically. Due to space limitations the summary notes are very
brief and should only be taken as an indication of the nature of the
article. It should be noted that the references from approximately
1973 to 1988 are fairly complete and are based on reference cards
prepared by Helen Sawyer Hogg. The literature survey is ongoing. For
references dating back earlier than 1973, one should refer to the 3rd
Catalogue of Variable Stars in Globular Clusters (Sawyer Hogg, 1973)
and the references contained therein.
Variable Star Listing (see also variabls.dat):
This section of the file is set up almost identically to the format of
the previous version of this catalogue. New variables announced
between 1973 and 1988 have been assigned a number according to the
system in use in the 3rd Catalogue. They are reported in this section
with numbers that continue from those given in the 3rd Catalogue.
Often this numbering of variables differs from that of the authors,
but this system has been used as the numbering systems used by the
authors of the literature often conflict with each other. Wherever
possible, comments have been made to indicate the reference in which a
variable is first reported and the author's own designation for the
variable. For variables announced after 1988, we have decided, in most
cases, to adopt the authors' nomenclature instead.
The listing gives, in order, the variable number, the position in
relation to the cluster centre in arcseconds north(x") and east(y"),
the visual maximum and minimum magnitudes (Generally in B or V,
consult the references for more information), the epoch of maximum,
the period, and then brief remarks pertaining to the variable. Most of
the remarks made about variables have the same meaning as in the 3rd
catalogue. In addition to those comments, remarks have been made about
membership (mem or mem?), and field variables are indicated as f or
f?. Alternate periods are often given in the remarks column.
Individual author's designations for variables are often given in this
column, the references section of each file should be consulted to aid
in identifying these variables. In some cases suspected variables are
included in the list, and usually these variables will have the remark
var? at some point in their individual line entry. In many cases
variables have been reported, only to be shown later not to be
variable, these usually have the comment of "not var" in their entry.
Confirmed variables that do not have known periods or light curves are
identified by "var". This listing of variable stars is not intended to
be exhaustive, most known field variables are not included. If there
is confusion as to the identification of a variable, the literature
should be considered the primary source for acquiring information on
these variables.
Suggestions on usage:
In general, the most recent and reliable periods, epochs, magnitudes
and the like are included, but in cases where more than one value was
available, a decision was made as to what data was used in this
catalogue. If there is confusion as to the source of information in
this listing, the best thing to do is to consult the references moving
from most recent to earlier papers. Also, articles with a description
along the lines of "elements of variables" are much more likely to
contain the data appearing in these files. Other papers that will
likely contain data on the variables will mention either photometry of
variables or photometry of the cluster. The data used in the variable
star listings was also generally taken from the more commonly
available literature, although this is not always the case. As we
continue our work on the catalogue, we are planning to indicate at the
end of each cluster's table, the main references for the entries in
the table.
General Comments on the Catalogue:
Several final comments should be made on the catalogue in general.
1) These data are tentative, as modifications and additions to the
catalogue files are ongoing, and later changes may invalidate
earlier versions of the files.
2) The literature surveyed is only complete to 1988, with some later
references included as time has permitted. Even up to and including
references of 1988, there may be material missing that should be
included in these catalogue files.
3) The numbering of the new variables has been somewhat arbitrary, but
a decision had to be made to allow the variables to be identified
in a consistent fashion. The original literature should be
consulted to obtain definite identifications of new variables.
Historical Remarks:
The catalog was submitted to the ADC by Christine Clement. The update
for 1973 to 1988 was prepared by Tara Rosebery and Quentin Dufton
under the supervision of Christine Clement. A further update has been
prepared by Jay Burford.
The catalog was received by the ADC 16-Apr-1997 in the format closely
matching that of Sawyer Hogg's 3rd Catalogue of Variable Stars in
Globular Clusters. The data were extensively reorganized by P. Kuin to
provide several tables of the basic information in addition to the
data given for each cluster in one single file. The identifyer for
each Globular Cluster was added to the new tables.
