In this paper, a new library of high resolution synthetic spectra is presented, ranging from the near-ultraviolet (300nm) to the near-infrared (1.8µm). The library spans all the stellar types that are relevant to the integrated light of old and intermediate-age stellar populations in the involved spectral region (spectral types F through M and all luminosity classes). The grid was computed for metallicities ranging from [Fe/H]=-2.5 to +0.5, including both solar and α-enhanced ([α/Fe]=0.4) chemical compositions. The synthetic spectra are a good match to observations of stars throughout the stellar parameter space encompassed by the library and over the whole spectral region covered by the computations. Description: Each star is stored in a file placed in the "sp" subdirectory, and the name of the file indicates the atmospheric parameters of the stellar spectrum (decimal points in gravity and abundances are omitted): <Teff><logg><[Fe/H]><[alpha/Fe]>.txt, i.e. 575045m10p00.ms.fits means Teff=5750K, logg=4.5, [Fe/H]=-1.0, [alpha/Fe]=+0.0 Each FITS file contains two spectra, stored as an "image" of 750901x2 points; the first "slice" represents the fluxes relative to the continuum, and the second one the absolute fluxes in erg/cm2/s/Å (0.01W/m2/nm).
