Description:
     A new catalogue of clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been
     constructed from searches of the IIIa-J component of the ESO/SERC
     Southern Sky Atlas. The catalogue contains coordinate and diameter
     measurements of 1762 clusters in a 25x25° area of sky centred
     on the LMC, but excluding the very crowded 3.5 square deg. region
     around the Bar. The distribution of these clusters appears as
     two superimposed elliptical systems. The higher density inner
     system extends over about 8d; the lower density outer system
     can be represented by 13d X 10d disc inclined at 42d to the line
     of sight. There are suggestions of two weak "arms" in the latter.

Note (1): Acronyms are as follows:
       N = NGC (New General Catalogue)
      IC = Index Catalogues
      SL = Shapley & Lindsay 1963
      LW = Lynga & Westerlund (1963MNRAS.127...31L 1963MNRAS.127...31L)
      HS = Hodge & Sexton (1966AJ.....71..363H 1966AJ.....71..363H)
      OH = Olszewski & al. (1988AJ.....95...84O 1988AJ.....95...84O)
    A colon after the name indicates that the cluster is incorrectly
    marked in the Hodge-Wright Atlas (1967)
  (Table 2)
  The following clusters have cross-identifications as shown:
    HS25   =   LW45                    LW38   not   SL24
    HS62   =   SL102                   LW97    =    SL135
    HS110  =   LW1131                  LW344   =    SL798
    HS149  =   LW151 (not SL279)       LW351   =    N2162 (not SL814)
    HS215  =   LW181                   LW452   =    SL876
    HS330  =   LW224                   SL786   =    N2151
    HS450  =   LW371                   SL798  not   N2151
    HS453  =   LW402 (= SL844)
   The following clusters in the Hodge (1980,1988) papers should have
   cross-identifications as shown:
    H 1.5  =   HS43                    H 10.189 = HS154
    H 1.25 =   HS65                    H 10.190 = HS156
    H 9.73 =   SL154                   H 10.198 = SL300
    H 9.79 =   SL162
  The N,SL,HS and LW identifications are as in Note (1) above;
  the H identifications refer to Hodge (1980,1988), with the first
  numerical component in the identification number referring to
  the field, and the second to the number within that field.

  Objects previously classified as clusters but excluded from catalog
  (Table 1). The numerical codes "c" are as follows:
        1  Nothing detected            4   Association
        2 Asterism or bright star 5 Nebula and/or dust cloud
        3  Galaxy                      6   Uncertain classification
