VII/36 Galaxy Redshifts (Rood 1980)
A Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts
Rood H.J.
ADC_Keywords: Redshifts ; Galaxy catalogs
Description:
The Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts was compiled by Dr. Rood to enter the
most accurate redshift for each entry in the Uppsala General Catalog
of Galaxies below 15000 km/s, plus some fainter galaxies in the
fields of rich clusters, plus some southern galaxies. The catalog is
99 percent complete for declinations north of -2.5deg and blue
magnitude (Pmag) brighter than 13.
The present documentation is mostly adapted from the "Documentation of
the Machine-Readable Version of the Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts"
by Theresa A. Nagy and Robert S. Hill, May 1981, prepared for NASA
GSFC, Greenbelt, No SSD-T-5069-0013-81.

Note (1): from Nilson, P.N. 1973. Uppsala Observatory Annals, Volume 6)
and Supplement (Nilson, P.N. 1974. Catalogue of Selected Non-UGC
Galaxies, Uppsala Observatory Report #5) from the Fisher and
Tully (redshift catalogue submitted to ApJS). The UGC is only
available for Northern galaxies and the Supplement number has an "A"
as the first character. All identifiers are left justified in this field.
Note (2): OtherName includes:
N = New General Catalogue (NGC),
I = Index Catalogue (IC), or
A = Anonymous designations from the Reference Catalogue of
Bright Galaxies (RC2)
3C = Third Cambridge number or other identification found from the
source material
Note (3): Equatorial coordinates are from Fisher and Tully, other source
or the UGC.
Note (4): the Blue magnitude is from the Catalogue of Galaxies and
Clusters of Galaxies (Zwicky, F. et al. 1960-1968), or estimated from
other published magnitudes through an empirical relation, or estimated
by the source of the redshift (r_HVel), or estimated by Nilson for the
UGC. An individual galaxy in a double galaxy system with Zwicky
magnitude Pmag is assigned the magnitude Pmag+0.7. For entries which
did not have magnitudes, a value of 99.9 was inserted in these bytes.
Note (5): this byte is set to 1 if the redshift of the given source
(r_HVel) differs from another source by more than three times
the combined rms error of the redshift determinations, or by more than
about 300 km/s. This information is not complete, i.e. some discordant
redshifts are not indicated. Otherwise, this byte is equal to zero.
Note (6): This byte can have a value of one, two or three as follows:
= 1, if the e_HVel (bytes 52-54) is directly from the source r_HVel
(bytes 78-90)
= 2, if the rms is taken as 1.42 times the σ1 for the source
as given in the RC2 (G. de Vaucouleurs, A. de Vaucouleurs and H.G.
Corwin, 1976), or is indirect or uncertain in other way
= 3, if the rms error is of unknown reliability
Otherwise, this byte is equal to zero.
Note (7): the heliocentric velocity is from the source r_HVel (bytes 78-90)
which generally had the smallest rms error. For galaxies with high
quality 21cm redshift determinations (rms error about 8 km/s) from
more than one source, the value given here is generally from the
source which constituted the greater number of galaxy redshifts (i.e.
first, Fisher and Tully; second, Shostak; see r_HVel in bytes 78-90).
There are some negative values.
Note (8): the rms if the redshift (HVel, bytes 46-50) as determined by the
source (r_HVel, bytes 78-90) in units of km/s.
High quality 21cm redshifts have been assigned by Rood the nominal
("and realistic") value of 8 km/s. Other rms errors are derived from
an analysis of differences between redshifts from a given source and
sources of high quality 21cm redshifts for galaxies in common
(cf. ueHVel and neHVel in bytes 56 and 58).
Note (9): the velocity relative to the Local Group is defined by
V0 = HVel + 300 sin(GLON) cos(GLAT)
Note (10): Most of the codes are taken directly from the
"Index of Galaxy Spectra" (G.R. Gisler and E.D. Friel, 1979,
Pachart Publishing House, Tucson, Arizona) and sometimes these codes
are followed in parentheses by the code from "The Second Reference
Catalogue of Bright Galaxies".

Historical Notes:
* May 1981: Remarks and Modifications made at ADC, NASA / GSFC:
The machine-readable version of the Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts (H.J.
Rood, unpublished) was received from Dr. P.J.E. Peebles (Princeton
University) in December of 1980. The catalogue was compiled by Dr.
Rood to enter the most accurate redshift for each entry in the Uppsala
General Catalogue of Galaxies below 15000 km/s, plus some fainter
galaxies in fields of rich clusters, plus some southern galaxies
(usually those with accurate 21cm redshifts). The catalogue is 99%
complete for declinations north of -2.5deg and blue magnitude (Pmag)
brighter than 13.
Modifications were made to that machine-readable version as follows:
1. The first record initially was IC 5041 which did not have
coordinates listed and hence as RA=0 and DE=0 it appeared first on
the tape. The coordinates for this object (from machine-readable
version of the Master Object List, R.S. Dixon, 1977 in
"Compilation, Critical Evaluation, and Distribution of Stellar
Data", ed. C. Jaschek and G.A. Wilkins, D. Reidel Publishing
Company, Dordrecht-Holland, pp. 167ff) are RA=20h40.5, DE=-29d53'
(epoch 1950 given to the same precision as the catalogue). This
record was then put in its proper place in the catalogue before
the remainder of the modifications were made. We would like to
thank Dr. W. Warren for the suggestion to look in Dixon's Master
Object List to find the coordinates for IC 5041.
2. A sequential counter was added to each record (#1 - 3981) which
represents the order of the catalogue in order of increasing
right ascension at epoch 1950.0.
3. For entries which did not have a value of the blue magnitude
(Pmag) a value of 99.9 was entered.
4. The designations of uncertainty (parentheses "()") and not newly
derived ("-") in the listing of the catalogue as received were
not included in the machine-readable version. These have been
added but in the form of a single asterisk ("*") or dash ("-")
as ueHVel and neHVel in bytes 56 and 58.
5. The redshift relative to the Local Group V0 was not included on
the machine-readable version. This quantity was subsequently
computed by calculating galactic coordinates (GLON,GLAT) and
utilizing the quantity of the redshift (HVel). Many of these
computed values were compared with the list as sent by Rood and
approximately 10% were found to differ by 1 km/s. This is probably
due to differences between the galactic coordinates as computed
at GSFC and the coordinates used by Peebles. We have chosen to
retain our computed values since this would be consistent with the
galactic coordinates give herein.
6. Since the galactic coordinates (GLON,GLAT) had to be computed to
add the value of the redshift relative to the Local Group (V0),
these have been retained in the machine-readable version for
convenience.
7. The original logical record length was 80 bytes. A total of 16
blank bytes have been deleted from the original version but 26
bytes of additional data have been added, so that the new logical
record length is 90 bytes.
