\begin{abstract}

The various volumes of the {\em Yale Zone Catalogues} have been combined into a
single, homogeneous, machine-readable volume, sorted by position, containing
the information common to most of the volumes. Additional data are provided in
separate files. The notes have been transcribed into a machine-readable form
and are provided both in that form and on microfiche. Errors detected in the
course of the preparation of the catalogue, as well as previously known errors,
have been corrected, and supplementary data have been added.

\section{Introduction}

\subsection{Description}

In the late 1920's, Yale University Observatory started to photograph the sky
in large fields to determine positions and proper motions for stars in the {\em
Astronomische Gesellschaft} (AG) zones (see page 9 for references). Most of the
sky has now been measured and the positions and proper motions published in
various volumes of the {\em Transactions of the Yale University Observatory}
(see the source references). Except for the $-60^{\circ}$ to $-70^{\circ}$
zones, these were transcribed into machine-readable form by the U.S. Naval
Observatory; the additional zone was received in machine-readable form and
edited by the Astronomical Data Center. Each published volume covers a small
range of declinations, and the machine-readable versions followed this
approach. Because the preparation of these volumes extended over a forty-four
year period, the format and the contents changed with time. Hence, it appeared
desirable to create a single, uniform catalogue that would contain most of the
information and could be accessed by right ascension as well as declination. It
should be noted that the various volumes of the {\em Yale Zone Catalogues} are
{\bf not} on the same system. {\bf No attempt has been made to reduce the
individual catalogues to a common system.}

Most of the printed volumes are arranged by AG number. These numbers are
retained with the addition of a two-letter abbreviation to indicate the AG
volume from which the number is taken (see page 9). Because some stars lack an
AG number, a running number also has been added for each volume and it is the
running number, preceded by the volume number, which is used for references to
notes and other tables and files. The remaining volumes, in the far south,
retain their original running numbers.

An attempt was made to retain most of the information in the printed catalogue,
whether or not it was contained in the previous machine-readable versions. The
notes were transcribed to machine-readable form and are now given in a file
arranged by volume and star number. This file is given both in machine-readable
form and on microfiche. Not included in the notes are GC numbers, unless
additional information is also given (the fact that a star is in the GC is
retained, however), and numbers in the {\em Catalogues of Stars Suspected of
Variability} (Kukarkin 1951, 1965), if no magnitude range is given. Also
omitted are the codes for the catalogues used for the first epoch positions in
the $+50^{\circ}$ to $+60^{\circ}$ zones and the type of image that was
measured (spectra or both spectra and central images).

This document describes the unified machine-readable {\em Yale Zone Catalogue}
and its auxiliary files. It outlines the procedures used to correct and extend
the previous version; it is intended to enable users to read and process the
data without problems and guesswork. For more detailed descriptions, see the
introductions to the printed volumes. {\bf A copy of this document should
accompany any machine-readable version of the unified catalogue originating
from the Astronomical Data Center.}

\section{Structure}

\subsection{File Summary}

The machine version of the {\em \cat } consists of nine files. Table
\ref{t:sumtab} gives the machine-independent file attributes. All logical
records are of fixed length, and, if the catalogue is received on magnetic
tape, it will contain blocks of fixed length except that the last block may be
short. The first file contains the basic catalogue; the second file contains
the notes to the catalogue; the next five files contain addenda for various
zones for material not included in the basic catalogue; the eighth file
contains the double star names and numbers from Aitken's {\em New General
Catalogue of Double Stars} (ADS) (Aitken 1932) for those stars in the {\em
Washington Double Star Catalog (1984 edition)} (WDS) (Worley 1984); and the
ninth file contains the variable star names for those stars included in the
{\em General Catalogue of Variable Stars } (third edition) (GCVS) (Kukarkin
{\em et al.} 1969-1970).

\caption{Summary Description of Catalogue Files}
\label{t:sumtab}
\end{table}

The information contained in the above table is sufficient for a user to
describe the indigenous characteristics of the machine-readable version of the
{\em \cat\/} to a computer. Information easily varied from installation to
installation, such as block size (physical record length), blocking factor
(number of logical records per physical record), total number of blocks,
density, number of tracks, and character coding (ASCII, EBCDIC) for tapes, is
not included. This information should always accompany secondary copies if any
are supplied to other users or installations.

The following sections give a byte-by-byte description of the contents of each
data file.

\subsection{Basic Catalogue (File 1 of 9)}

\subsubsection{Contents and Format}

This file contains the basic catalogue with the data that are common to most of
the volumes of the {\em Yale Zone Catalogues} and that are likely to be of
interest to most users. If any datum is missing, the corresponding field will
be blank. Although an {\bf I} or an {\bf F} format is often suggested to make
the units clear, an {\bf A} format may be necessary to distinguish between a
blank and a zero. Units are given as used but the suggested format will provide
data in normal units ({\em e.g.}, the magnitude will be read as 9.68 with the
suggested F format or 968 with an A format).

\caption{Data File Record Format for File 1, Basic Catalogue}
\label{t:cat}
\end{table}

\begin{definition}{28ex}

\item[Volume number] The volume number of the {\em \YTrans} from which the
record is taken.

\item[Volume part] The part number from which the record is taken if the volume
is in two parts (printed as I or II, but in Arabic numerals in these
machine-readable files). This byte is blank if the part number is not
applicable.

\item[Star number] A running number in each volume or part of a volume. The
number is used to refer to the record in the notes and other files. {\bf Note:}
Throughout this document and the data files that it describes, records are
identified by the eight-byte number consisting of the volume number, the volume
part (or blank), and the running number within the part (i.e., the first eight
bytes of these records). In other tables, this eight-byte number is simply
called the ``star number''.

\item[Note code] Various letters are used in this byte to provide further
information about the record (see Table \ref{t:note}). An {\bf N} indicates a
more detailed note in File 2.

\item[WDS and GCVS code] A {\bf W} in this byte indicates that the star is
present in the {\em Washington Double Star Catalog (1984 edition)} (Worley
1984) (WDS). If more than one star in this file has the same DM number and the
star is in the WDS, both stars will have a {\bf W} in this byte and at least
one will be listed in File 8. If the star is in the {\em General Catalogue of
Variable Stars} (third edition), (Kukarkin 1969-70) (GCVS) this byte will
contain a {\bf V} and the star will be listed in File 9. A {\bf B} in this
byte indicates that the star is in both the WDS and the GCVS and the star is
listed in both Files 8 and 9.

\item[AG number] The number of the star in an {\em Astronomische Gesellschaft}
(AG) catalogue as given in the {\em Yale Transactions.}

\item[AG volume] A two-letter code to reference the particular AG catalogue to
which the number refers (see page 9).

\item[Equatorial coordinates] Positions are given at equinox and equator B1950,
at the epoch given in bytes 36-41.

\item[Epoch] Epoch of observation. Proper motions must be applied to change the
epoch.

\item[Visual magnitude] The visual magnitude as given in the printed catalogue
or as derived from the photographic magnitude minus the color index. A
magnitude of 30.0 indicates that the star is variable.

\item[Photographic magnitude] The photographic magnitude as given in the
published catalogue or as derived from the visual magnitude plus the color
index. A magnitude of 30.0 indicates that the star is variable.

\item[Spectral type] The spectral type as given in the printed volume. ``Cmp''
indicates that the spectrum is composite; additional information is usually
given in the notes. Hoffleit (private communication) points out that many
A-type stars listed with two different HD numbers, indicating a composite, are
actually Am stars

\item[DM or ME catalogue code] Abbreviation for DM or ME catalogs:

\begin{definition}{4ex}
\item[BD] {\em Bonner} or {\em Southern Durchmusterung}
\item[CD] {\em C\'{o}rdoba Durchmusterung}
\item[CP] {\em Cape Photographic Durchmusterung}
\item[ME] Melbourne {\em Astrographic Catalogue}
\end{definition}

\item[DM Number] In the form $\pm$ZZNNNNN.

\item[DM Component] If two or more records have the same DM number, a letter
appears in this byte to distinguish the components. If the system is in the
WDS, the same component letters are added as in that catalogue and no other
indication of the change is given; otherwise, the brighter or western star is
labled {\bf A} and an indication is given either by {\bf C} in byte 9 or in
the notes that the star is not in the WDS.

\item[ME Number] The Melbourne {\em Astrographic Catalogue} number is in the
form PPPPNNNN, where PPPP stands for a four-digit plate number, and NNNN stands
for a four-digit number for the star on that plate.
\end{definition}

\subsubsection{Codes Used for Notes (in byte 9)}

\hline
  G & All & This star is in the {\em General Catalogue} (GC) (Boss 1937). \\
\hline
  C & All & {\bf Catalogue:} A change has been made to this record.
            If a component letter has been entered for a pair of stars with the
            same DM number, which is not in the {\em Washington Double Star
            Catalog}, no additional information is provided. All other
            changes are listed in Table \ref{t:chg}.

            {\bf Notes:} Information not provided in the original note has been
            added. ``Not in the WDS'' is always an addition but is not marked.

\subsection{Notes (File 2 of 9)}

All information in the notes to the printed catalogues was transcribed into
machine-readable form except the numbers in the {\em General Catalogue of 33342
Stars for the Epoch 1950} (GC) for stars for which no additional information is
given and the numbers in the {\em Catalogues of Stars Suspected of Variability}
(Kukarkin 1951, 1965) with no ranges given. In addition, ADS numbers or names
from the WDS were added for systems with two components with the same DM number
in the catalogue. Notes were also produced for {\em \YTrans} {\bf 32}, Part II.
These notes primarily include variable star names for records in which the
magnitude in the catalogue is 30.0 and double star names for stars with two DM
components in this volume. The information in this file is also given on
microfiche to provide hard-copy access. No field is blank in this file, but
bytes may be blank. If the {\bf I} format is used, zeros may be substituted for
blank bytes, but the meaning should be obvious.

The following table describes the format for the notes. The first eight bytes
are identical to the first eight bytes of the corresponding record.

\subsection{Addenda (Files 3 - 7 of 9)}

The data that most users will find to be of interest are included in File 1,
the basic table. However, some volumes contain additional information that may
be of use for special purposes. This additional information is included in
Files 3 through 7. The following tables describe the format and contents of
each of these files. In each case, fields in which data are missing are blank.
Although an {\bf F} or an {\bf I} format is suggested to give a reading in
normal units, the {\bf A} format may be preferable to distinguish between a
blank and a zero.

\begin{definition}{24ex}

\item[Plates measured] Eighteen two-digit numbers identifying plates on which
images were measured. If the number measured is less than 18, a zero fill is
used for blank fields.

\item[Field star code] For the vast majority of stars, the positions were
derived directly in the reduction. For these stars, the field star code is
``0''. If the star appears on only one plate for which no reference position
data are available, the position has been derived from the plate constants for
the plate on which it appears (i.e., the classical method). For these stars,
the field star code is ``1''.

\item[Proper motion code]

\begin{definition}{5ex}

\item[A] Proper motion taken directly from the CPC, because the star does not
occur in the La Plata catalogs. This value is given only for convenience. It is
not on the same system as the other proper motions. It should not be used in
any statistical treatment of the material.

\item[B] The proper motion is derived from the difference between the Yale and
La Plata positions.

\item[C] The proper motions are also derived from the difference between the
Yale and the La Plata positions, but the latter is a mean of two values in
overlapping zones. The epoch for the position is also the mean of those for the
two zones.

\item[D] The La Plata position is from the NFK (Peters 1907) and is not on the
system of the La Plata catalog. Thus, the proper motion is derived from the NFK
and Yale positions.

\item[E] The star appears on both Yale (1942) and Sydney (1962) plates. The
proper motion is from the difference in position between these plates.

\item[F] The proper motion is from the difference between the mean of the Yale
and Sydney positions and the La Plata position.

\subsection{Multiple and Variable Stars (Files 8 - 9 of 9)}

Some of the volumes of the {\em Yale Zone Catalogues} indicate that a star is
in the ADS, some give ADS numbers in the notes, and some give other double star
designations in the notes. Similarly, some of the later volumes give variable
star names in the notes. The notes have been transcribed as printed, but, to
make the final catalogue more uniform, the DM numbers have been used to search
the WDS and the GCVS for stars listed in both this catalogue and one or both of
the other catalogues. As noted above, records for the stars in common have
either a {\bf W}, a {\bf V}, or a {\bf B} in byte 10, and are listed in Files 8
and/or 9. The formats for these files follow. In File 8, the ADS field may be
blank; no fields are blank in file 9.

\section{Additional Information}

\subsection{Construction of the Integrated Catalogue}

The first step in constructing the integrated catalogue was to review each of
the volumes of the {\em Yale Zone Catalogues} to determine which information
was common to most volumes. These data were then extracted from the
machine-readable versions and rewritten in a common format, with the addition
of a running number for those zones that did not already have one and the
number of the Yale volume and part. Data provided in many catalogues that were
{\bf omitted} included the precession terms, which are now easily computed when
needed, and whether spectral or both spectral and central images were measured.
Since the integrated version is in position order without regard to the
declination zone, a code was added to indicate the particular catalogue that
was used for the AG number. If the same star is listed in two overlapping
zones, both entries are included. The duplication should be obvious from the
data.

Because the original transcription was done on a computer without alphanumeric
capability, various codes were employed to replace letters. These were changed
back to the original letter values. {\bf Cmp} and {\bf 300} were inserted in
the spectra and magnitude fields to denote a composite spectrum and a variable
magnitude, respectively. In some volumes, blends were indicated by placement of
the data and were not properly indicated in the machine-readable files; these
blends are now indicated in the notes.

In addition to the detailed notes in footnotes or the back of each volume, and
the symbols following the star number, many volumes contain additional
information in various columns of the records. With the exceptions noted above,
this information was either added to the detailed notes or indicated by a code
in byte 9 (see Table \ref{t:note}). This often required that notes be added to
provide multiple information. To save typing, the same codes were used in the
notes as in the basic catalogue when appropriate.

The records in each volume were sorted by Durchmusterung number and examined
both for duplicate DM numbers and for DM numbers that were out of right
ascension order sufficiently to indicate an error. All such records were
checked against the DM catalogues, and many errors were discovered and
corrected. In the cases where duplicate DM numbers were valid, letters were
added so that every DM number is unique in a given volume. (It is possible,
although not probable, that one zone may contain two records with the same DM
number while the overlapping zone will contain only one.)

Some printed volumes contain both visual and photographic magnitudes; some
contain only one or the other; and some contain a color index with either one
or two magnitudes. If only a single magnitude is printed, it is used in this
machine-readable version and the field for the missing magnitude is blank. If
one magnitude and a color index are given, they are used to compute the missing
magnitude. If both magnitudes and a color index are given in the printed
version, the color index is ignored.

{\em \YTrans} {\bf 23} contains addenda to earlier volumes.  Sections A, B, E,
and F had been included on the original tapes; the spectra in sections C and D
were added in this processing.

In the printed volume of {\em \YTrans} {\bf 32}, Part II, many of the magnitudes
clearly are unreasonable. Most of the stars for which this is true are
variable. They have been so marked in the catalogue and the variable star name
has been given in the notes. For the few stars that are not obviously variable,
the magnitudes have been taken from {\bf SIMBAD}.

Although an attempt has been made to make the catalogue, its related files, and
this document adequate for many purposes, the introduction to each of the
{\em Yale Zone Catalogues} contains a substantial amount of additional
information. {\bf It is recommended that the user who wishes to understand the
catalogue in greater detail refer to these introductions.}

\subsection{Acknowledgments}

We thank E. Dorrit Hoffleit for assistance from time to time throughout the
preparation of this integrated catalogue, both in explaining some areas of
confusion and in checking the accuracy of certain data. We also thank David
Herald for calling our attention to the erroneous magnitudes in {\bf 32}, Part
II, and H. Jahreiss and T. Corbin for checking the positions of several stars in
various other catalogues. The {\bf SIMBAD} data bank of the Centre de
Donn\'{e}es Astronomiques de Strasbourg was helpful, particularly for correcting
the magnitudes in {\em \YTrans} {\bf 32}, Part II.

\section{Changes from the USNO Tapes}

Table \ref{t:chg} lists the changes between the original USNO tapes and the
current machine-readable version. All changes have resulted from work at the
Astronomical Data Center either during the analysis of this catalogue or the
analysis of the SAO catalogue except for the changes to records: 28 3423, 29
9575, and 19 3330, which are from Parsons (1977); 221 144 and 19 75, for which
the errors were pointed out by D. Dunham (private communication); and 18 108,
19 5005, 20 2533, 21 5233, 21 5234, and 262 4749, which are included in
Bischoff (1972). In {\em Trans. Astron. Observ. Yale Univ.} {\bf 30}, a number
of DM numbers are given incorrectly in the main table, but the notes state that
they should be changed in {\em Perth}. These DM numbers are corrected in the
integrated catalogue and the corrections are repeated in the notes but are not
listed in Table \ref{t:chg}.
