Description:
The fourth volume of the revised version 1.1 of the General Catalogue
of Variable Stars (GCVS) contains cross-identification tables. The
tables contain all GCVS stars (including extragalactic variables from
vol. V), stars from the New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars
(NSV), as well as stars from the name-lists of variable stars nos. 67
to 72; it also makes it possible to find out identifications between
the GCVS and the NSV catalog.
Introduction:
The cross-identification tables contain all GCVS vols I-III,V and NSV
stars as well as stars from the name-lists Nos. 67 - 72. The tables
also contain stars suspected in variability since the publication of
the NSV catalogue or not present in this catalogue for other reasons.
We give only source catalogue numbers for these stars.
We tried to provide as complete lists as possible for the stars
identified with the catalogues HD, BD, CoD, CPD, BS, ADS and for the
stars with preliminary HV (Harvard Variable) designations. As for the
other catalogues, our task here was more difficult since we had to
rely upon references to source catalogue names made by variable star
researchers; the tables in the present volume reproduce the materials
used in our work, and incompleteness seems to be inavoidable.
The differences between the computer-readable version 1.0 [1] and 1.1
of vol. IV are the following :
1. Stars of the 71th and 72th name-lists of variable stars [2,3] have
been added.
2. For extragalactic variable stars, we present identifications
between source catalogues and the GCVS Vol. V [4].
3. After the publication of the NSV catalogue [5], rather many NSV
stars received their final GCVS names (in the system of GCVS Vols.
I-III [6] and subsequent name-lists). A number of stars have two or
more different GCVS names. Recently many GCVS stars in the regions
of external galaxies got new names in the system of GCVS Vol. V.
The first cross-identification table presents all aliases of
presently-accepted official GCVS names.
4. Similarly, the second cross-identification table presents aliases
of NSV designations.
5. The cross-identification tables now additionally include the lists
of Harvard (HV) and Vatican (VV) variable stars.
6. All necessary corrections found during 3 years elapsed since the
publication of the version 1.0 have been added.
7. We have excluded our very incomplete lists of cross-identifications
for X-ray sources (GX, X, XX [1]).
Vol. IV version 1.1 consists of 32 cross-identification tables with
the catalogues and lists arranged in the alphabet order of the
abbreviated names of source catalogues and lists (see the Note
following the file description). They are preceeded with two more
tables, those for GCVS and NSV catalogs, playing a role differing from
those of the rest of the tables. The first one contains GCVS stars
having also NSV catalog names or/and names within corresponding
galaxies in the GCVS Vol. V. The second one contains NSV catalog stars
having names within corresponding galaxies in the GCVS Vol. V or/and
alternate NSV catalog names (cases of duplicate entries for a single
star in the NSV catalog); only stars without GCVS (Vols. I-III) names
are included. The names in the first column of each of these two
tables are considered principle names of corresponding stars; these
stars enter the rest of the tables ONLY under such first names.
