Description:
A single table combines the revised and extended results of 24 series
of photometric observations made in South Africa between 1947 and 1960
on the nine Harvard E regions at declination -45°. For each of
about 90 stars in each region are tabulated V and B-V on the standard
U,B,V system, an ultraviolet-free blue magnitude S'Pg, a photovisual
magnitude SPv and, in most cases, an ultraviolet minus blue colour
(U-B)C.
The internal standard error of an entry is ±0.01mag or less.

Note (3):
S'Pg is close to the natural system of the blue observations of
Series 18, which were made with the 24-inch Victoria refractor. S'Pg
is an "ultraviolet-free" version of SPg, the photographic magnitude
system which, with SPv, was set up in 1953 and adopted as standard for
the Cape Photographic Catalogues for 1950.0 (catalog I/116)
Note (4):
results for star E6 83 = HD 127972/3, and E6 85/86 are repeated
on two consecutive lines.
Note (5):
'f' when Cape refers to the "Catalogue of 20554 faint stars in the
Cape astrographic zone -40 to -52° for the equinox of 1900.0"
(catalogue I/6). The number otherwise refers to the Cape Zone
Catalogue (catalogue I/5)
Note (6):
The provisional U-B colours, which are given for most of the stars
brighter than B=9.0, are on the standard UBV system and have been
determined with the 18-inch reflector as part of Series 25 and its
extension (cf. obs.dat). The photometer has an EMI type 6094
photo-multiplier and the filters used are of Schott glass, 1mm UG2 for
the U observations and 1mm BG12 + 3mm GG13 for the B observations.
These particular filters were chosen because it was believed that they
would give a natural colour system close to the standard one. Actually
the relationship between the natural and standard U-B colours is not
quite linear and involves a term in B-V.

Note (1):
Magnitudes and separation of double stars have generally been taken
from the Southern Double Star Catalogue; in some cases data have been
obtained from the Cape Astrographic Zones, or by direct measurement of
photographic charts. These data are given merely to indicate that
photometric measures may be affected by the presence of companions. No
reference is made to companions more than five magnitudes fainter than
the primary star.
Individual photometric series are referred to by the numbers in file
"obs.log", followed by a 'b', 'y', etc. if a particular colour is
involved. Magnitude ranges when quoted for individual series are the
extreme ranges and not the probable ranges of variability in a few
cases the latter is given, but without reference to a particular
series.
When well-determined means for different series differ by 0.04mag or
more, this is noted. When this applies to V and not to S'Pg it is not
safe to assume that the star is variable. In some cases transformation
errors may be involved. In a few cases, especially in E7, background
stars are troublesome.
