Description:
This is the first version of a complete near-IR point source catalogue
towards the Magellanic Clouds extracted from the data obtained with
the DEep Near Infraread Survey of the Southern Sky (DENIS). The
catalogue covers an area of 19.87x16 square degrees centered on
(05:27:20-69:00:00) for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and 14.7x10
square degrees centered on (01:02:40-73:00:00) for the Small
Magellanic Cloud (SMC). It contains the sources detected in at least 2
of the 3 photometric bands I (Gunn-i centered at 0.8µm), J
(centered at 1.25µm), and Ks (centered at 2.15µm). The spatial
resolution is 1" in I and 3" in the J and K bands, and the limiting
magnitudes are I=18, J=16 and Ks=14. 70% of the detected sources are
real members of the Magellanic Clouds, and consist mainly of red
giants, asymptotic giant branch stars and supergiants.

Note (1): mean errors are derived from the photon statistics
within the aperture
Note (2): the extractions flags are the summation of the following
exclusive numbers:
1 = Bright neighbours or bad pixels
(more than 10 of the integrated area affected)
2 = The object was originally blended with another
4 = At least one pixel of the object is saturated
Some of the very bright sources with the highest extraction flag values
may suffer from large (>10arcsec) astrometric shift.
Note (3): the image flags are:
1 = Regression failed for this pixel
2 = Flat derived is less than 0.01 (dead pixels)
3 = Abnormally high flat
4 = Abnormally high residual after adjustment (5σ)
5 = Bias more than 5σ of mean
6 = Flat more than 5σ of mean
9 = Insufficient number of pixels left after iterative clipping
16 = Flat < 0.7 and/or flux < -200 ADU
32 = Flat > 1.3 and/or flux > 49500 ADU

Acknowledgements:
It is a pleasure to thank Maria-Rosa Cioni
and Cecile Loup who supplied the data in advance of
publication.
History:
* 11-Apr-2000: First release, which did not contain the magnitudes
for the strips numbered 0 (concerns 9930 stars in file lmc_ijk.dat)
* 20-Jun-2000: the strip numbers (Istrip, Jstrip and Kstrip) were set
to 999 when unknown (instead of 0); the magnitude values for the
strips numbered zero, previsouly set to 99.00, were re-entered
correctly in file lmc_ijk.dat.
