Description:
The catalog is an objective-prism survey of late-type stars in a
region of 396 square degrees surrounding the north galactic pole.
The objective-prism spectra employed have a dispersion of 58 nm/mm at
H-γ and extend into the ultraviolet region. The catalog contains
the magnitudes and spectral classes of 4027 stars of class G5 and
later, complete to a limiting photographic magnitude of 13.0. The
spectral classification of the stars is based on the Yerkes system.
The catalog includes the serial numbers of the stars corresponding to
the numbers on the identification charts in Upgren (1984), BD and HD
numbers, B magnitudes, spectral classes, and letters designating the
subregion and identification chart on which each star is located. This
survey was undertaken to determine the space densities at varying
distances from the galactic plane. Accurate separation of the surveyed
stars of G5 and later into giants and dwarfs was achieved through the
use of the UV region as well as conventional methods of classification.
The resulting catalog of 4027 stars is probably complete over the
region to a limiting photographic magnitude of 13.0. The region
covered by the survey is the same as that discussed by Slettebak and
Stock (1959) and is in the approximate range RA 11:30 to 13:00,
Declination +25 to +50 (B1950.0). The catalog includes all M and
Carbon stars previously published by Upgren (1960).
For a discussion of the classification criteria, the combining of
multiple classifications (each spectral image was classified twice),
the determination of magnitudes, and additional details about the
catalog, the source reference should be consulted.
Corrections, accurate positions, more identifications, and remarks
have been added in Nov. 2015 by B. Skiff in the file "positions.dat";
see the "History" section below for details.

Global Notes:
Note (G1): the NGP designation is made of a zone number (bytes 1-2) and a
sequential number in the zone (bytes 4-6). It is recommended to add
the declination sign (+) which makes the name clear, thus, for example
NGP +25 102.

History:
* 1971: the catalog was prepared by A.R. Upgren on punched cards
(see 1971BICDS...1...23. 1971BICDS...1...23.)
* 10-Jun-1995, by C.-H. Joseph Lyu [Hughes STX/NASA] (version 'A'):
The catalog, as originally received by the Centre de Donnees
Astronomiques de Strasbourg, was essentially in the form of the
published table, but with a brief data description (by columns) in
free text at the top of the file. However, some kind of strange
pseudo-coordinates had been added to the records. Right ascensions for
each region started at some value and increased by 0.01 hours for each
succeeding star. From each right ascension and the declination zone
(only), galactic coordinates had been computed. The right ascensions
then restarted for each new region. The source of these coordinates is
unknown, as they were not in the original catalog; Dr. Upgren did not
computerize the machine version and had no knowledge of their
existence. These coordinates were removed at the ADC. A comparison of
the machine-readable file against the published catalog also revealed
a number of errors, such as duplicate and missing records. A number of
errors had also been discovered by Dr. S. Nishimura of the Japanese
Astronomical Data Center, National Astronomical Observatory, Tokyo.
The errors have been corrected in the present file. The notes to the
catalog were computerized at the ADC and are flagged by asterisks in
the main file.
* 12-Nov-2015 (version 'B'), by Brian Skiff [Lowell Obs.]:
The positions were recovered from the published charts. The POSS-I
blue and red cut-outs from the Goddard SkyView utility were used to
identify the stars, and VizieR was then searched to get positions,
identifications, and V magnitudes.
The essential errata for this paper (1965AJ.....70..446U 1965AJ.....70..446U) include a
few typo corrections and omitted identifications, and a change in the
numbering for stars NGP +42 128 to 176 (star 177 does not exist). All
the errata are incorporated in the present list "position.dat".
The coordinates are mostly from UCAC2 or Tycho-2, though some others
are given as necessary including URAT1 in northernmost zones.
Coordinates for near-equal pairs are rounded to 1" precision when it
is clear that the spectral type applies to the combined light of the
double.
Some of the BD or HD numbers are added by me or found to be incorrect,
as noted in the remarks. When a non-HD/BD star appears in the AGK3,
that name has been added to the comments. In the northernmost two
zones (+49 and +50) there are a handful of HDE numbers, now also added
to the comments.
Special case: the F-type star AG+40 1247 is added from the notes
following star NGP +41 85; this seems to be independently classified
in comparison to the second F-stars paper (1963AJ.....68..194U 1963AJ.....68..194U, III/9)
