Description:
The second Henry Draper Extension, giving spectral classification for
about 87000 stars, up to now was published in the form of finding
charts only. This catalog contains a first portion (about 10000 stars)
of it in the form of a star catalogue, giving spectral types,
photographic magnitudes, precise positions (J2000) and, in many cases,
also proper motions of the stars HDE 332335 to HDE 342973. Positions
are derived from identifications of the HDE stars in the Astrographic
Catalogue. The mean error is about 0.3 arcsec. Magnitudes of the stars
are taken from the Astrographic Catalogue, for which we estimate an
accuracy of about 0.3 mag. To find proper motions the stars were also
identified with the PPM catalogue, whenever possible. Proper motions
in PPM typically have rms errors smaller than 0.5 arcsec/century.
Proper motions are given for about 2500 stars. A detailed description
of this catalog was done by Roser et al. (1991).

Nesterov V.V. et al. (1995A&AS..110..367N 1995A&AS..110..367N), available as catalog

Remarks and Modifications:
The Henry Draper Catalogue provides spectral types and rough positions
for about 225 000 stars all over the sky. The Henry Draper Extension
(HDE) provides the same type of data for about 47 000 additional
stars. Compared to these two, the second Henry Draper Extension,
containing another 87 000 stars classified by Miss Cannon, is little
known. This is because it has never been published as a star
catalogue, but only in the form of hand-marked finding charts. The 275
charts, named HDE Charts by A. Cannon (1937), were published in the
Annie J. Cannon Memorial Volume of The Henry Draper Extension (Cannon
& Mayall 1949). This kind of publication was formerly sufficient for
the retrieval of a star with a telescope. Nowadays, when telescopes
are computer controlled, it is necessary to have precise coordinates
of the stars one wishes to observe. One also needs good coordinates
for identifying stars in other catalogues. Last, but not least, star
charts cannot be brought into computer readable form by just
key-punching a printed table. Some work on the HDE Charts was done by
Nancy G. Roman of the Astronomical Data Center at NASA Goddard Space
Flight Center, who key-punched HDE numbers and accompanying spectral
types. At l'Observatoire de Strasbourg, Bonnet measured x,y
coordinates on the charts for those stars not contained in the
Durchmusterungen. However, her work remained incomplete and has never
been appropriately published. Part of it is contained in the SIMBAD
data base of the CDS, Strasbourg. In order to make the 87 000
additional HDE stars conveniently available, we decided to transform
the finding charts into a star catalogue. As a first step, we have
measured, reduced, and cross-identified approximately 10 000 stars.
The catalogue of 10 639 HDE stars is available on magnetic tape from
the astronomical data centers CDS (Strasbourg, France) and NSSDC
(Greenbelt, Maryland).
The positions given in the catalogue refer to the equinox J2000.0 and
to the epoch given in the catalogue. Table 1 shows a sample of a few
lines from the catalogue file, together with a short explanation. A
remarks file is attached to the catalogue with entries for all stars
showing peculiarities such as unclear identity, non-appearance in AC,
variability, etc. Information on variability was taken from Kholopov
et al. 1990. Only one of the 10 639 measured stars could not be
identified in AC (it is a Mira variable!). Five stars could
successfully be identified, although no stellar image is visible on
the printed HDE Charts (only the markers pointing to them). For 129
stars, no unique identification was possible. In most of these cases
the star image on the HDE Chart comprises two or three actual stars of
roughly equal brightness. The HDE spectral types will then be
composites of the corresponding stellar spectra (this can be inferred
from a sample HD objective-prism plate shown by Cannon & Pickering
1921). Our catalogue gives positions and magnitudes for all the
candidate stars, with suffixes A, B, C added to the HDE number. A
small number of stars could not be uniquely identified because the
hand-drawn markers on the charts were ambiguous. They are indicated in
the remarks file, and again suffixes A, B are added to the HDE number.
Two HDE numbers (340 719 and 340 720) refer to the same optical star:
it is a spectroscopic double star to which Miss Cannon correctly
assigned two spectral types, and thus two numbers.

This table gives a small sample of the catalogue file. Column 1
contains the HDE number. An 'R' in Col. 2 points to a remark in the
separate remarks file. Col. 3 contains the photographic magnitude from
AC, col. 4 the spectral type, cols. 5 and 6 the right ascension and
declination (for equinox J2000.0 and epoch given in col. 7). Columns 8
to 10 contain data for the PPM stars only: Cols. 8 and 9 give the
proper motions in r.a. and dec. (in units of s/yr and "/yr,
respectively) and col. 10 the PPM number.
