Abstract:
This is a compilation of spectra collected along the years at ESO,
OHP, CFHT and CASLEO in the near-ultraviolet, optical and
near-infrared ranges, complemented by IUE observations. Aiming at
population synthesis techniques, average template spectra were built
from weighted sums of individual spectra of star clusters taking into
account their spectral similarities, ages and metallicities.
Morphological types and spectral types, beyond spectral similarities,
were considered respectively for galaxy and star template building.
Both template and individual spectra are included in the library,
which contains spectra for 243 galaxies, 190 clusters and 72 stars,
amounting 868 spectra in the various spectral ranges.
Description:
Previously published data related to 20 papers and various unpublished
spectra have been compiled in this library, which contains individual
stars, Galactic, M31, and Magellanic Clouds star clusters, and
galaxies of various morphological types. Average template spectra
built from the individual ones are also provided. Templates of star
clusters and early-type galaxies, also included in the present
database, were previously published in the AAS CD-ROM Series, Vol. 7
(Leitherer et al., 1996PASP..108..996L 1996PASP..108..996L). Given the number of
objects with similar properties, the template spectra have improved
signal to noise and have been built from linked individual spectra in
order to cover the whole spectral range from the UV to the near-IR,
which is not the case for every particular object. For example, the
globular cluster NGC6517 has been observed just in the optical and so
contributes to the cluster template G5, the most metal-poor one, only
in the corresponding wavelength range; on the other hand, NGC5024,
contributes to the same template over the whole wavelength range, from
the UV to the near-IR. Being independent observations, data for a
given individual object in different spectral ranges are provided
separately. The spectra were corrected for foreground reddening
(except where indicated otherwise) and their resolution is in the
range 3-23A in the spectral domain 1200-10200A. The fluxes
(J.s{-1}.m{-2}.nm^{-1}) are normalized to 1 at 5870A. Whenever this
wavelength is outside the observed spectral range, normalization was
applied at 4000A for UV spectra and 7000A for near-IR spectra (except
where indicated otherwise).

Spectra from reference 'X' are normalized at 7500A.
The template spectra consist of average groups built from a
combination of stars in 1984ApJS...56..257J 1984ApJS...56..257J and 1989A&A...217...57A 1989A&A...217...57A. The
file names indicate the corresponding spectral type and luminosity class.
The extension 'MP' stands for metal-poor.

Except where indicated, all the spectra correspond to the central
regions of the galaxies. Burstein & Heiles (1984ApJS.54..33B) was used
for foreground reddening correction of galaxies without published data,
except when a remark "noRedC" exists in the "Rem" column.
Note (2): bul = bulge, nuc = nucleus, noRedC = spectra not reddening corrected.
