New CORALIE radial velocities of 6 previously-known hosts of potential brown-dwarf companions are presented. We use Hipparcos data to fully characterise the astrometric orbits of 6 objects, revealing M-dwarf companions with masses between 90MJup and 0.52M. We obtain an upper limit of 0.6% for the frequency of brown-dwarf companions around Sun-like stars. We find that the companion-mass distribution function is rising at the lower end of the brown-dwarf mass range, suggesting that in fact we detect the high-mass tail of the planetary distribution. Description: Spectroscopic data used in this publication: precise radial velocities. The data are plotted in Fig.2, Fig.3, Fig.4, and Fig.5. Two spectrographs were used: CORALIE and HARPS. The CORALIE Echelle spectrograph was upgraded in July 2007 which affected the instrument zero point. We decided to refer to the original CORALIE as CORALIE-98 and to the upgraded one as CORALIE-07. When using both set of data, the instrumental zero point should be adjusted. Instrument used as follows: C98 = CORALIE-98 and C07 = CORALIE-07 as designated by Segransan et al. (2010A&A...511A..45S 2010A&A...511A..45S).
