ADC_Keywords: Binaries, cataclysmic ; Radial velocities Keywords: binaries: close - stars: activity - stars: general - stars: individual (AM Herculis) - stars: magnetic fields Abstract: We present observations in the red region of the spectrum of the magnetic cataclysmic variable prototype AM Her during its 2005 low state. We confirm the unexpected structure of the Hα emission line and verify most of the conclusions of our earlier study: the line is typically triple-peaked, and the radial velocity curves of all three components are phased with the radial velocities of absorption features from the photosphere of the M dwarf secondary star. Description: Our spectroscopic data were acquired during several different observing runs in the summer of 2005. Two nights in 2005 June were dedicated to monitoring the system using the HYDRA multiobject spectrograph on the WIYN5 3.5m telescope, at Kitt Peak, Arizona. Photometric observations were made with the 1.25m telescope at the Morgan-Monroe Observatory of Indiana University, using a V filter. The data were acquired on the same nights as the WIYN spectroscopy and were as nearly simultaneous as the longitude difference and weather would allow.
