ADC_Keywords: Clusters, open; YSOs; Photometry, infrared; Stars, masses; Cross identifications Keywords: Near infrared astronomy ; Infrared photometry ; Protoclusters Abstract: We present near-infrared JHKs and narrowband H2(1-0) photometric observations of the W51A region, obtained with GTC EMIR, aiming to characterize its young stellar population, and provide mass estimates for individual cluster members and the protoclusters. Our observations reveal over 3000 new sources, out of which 88 are located in the protoclusters, W51 IRS2 and W51 Main. The average extinction (AV), measured from the J-H color, of sources is 19AV in W51 IRS2 and 14AV in W51 Main. We document 17 new instances of H2 emission in the region by utilizing observations from the H2(1-0) narrowband filter. Despite limited completeness, we estimated masses for each cluster member and estimated the total cluster mass to be in the range of 900-4700M for W51 IRS2 and 500-2700M for W51 Main, using an assumed age range of 1-3Myr. We measured the initial mass function (IMF) in the proto-clusters assuming a range of ages from 1-3Myr and found that the IMF slopes for both protoclusters are consistent with the Salpeter IMF in the mass range M≥8M within 1σ-2σ. Description: NIR J-, H-, Ks-band filters, and the narrowband H2 filter observations of the W51 GMC were conducted on 2020 June 7, and 2020 July 12. The observations were carried out using the NIR imaging camera and spectrograph EMIR (Espectrografo Multiobjeto Infra-Rojo), installed on the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canaries, Spain. Individual frames in all filters had exposure times of 10s. The reduced images had incorrect world coordinate system (WCS) information, causing the centroid of stars to be slightly offset from their true positions. The location of the bright stars from each frame were compared to their on-sky location measured by Gaia (Gaia EDR3, I/350) and the WCS was shifted accordingly to provide a closer match. We compared the GTC catalog to 2MASS (II/246), the UKIDSS galactic plane survey (GPS, II/316), as well as the catalogs of Kumar+2004 (J/MNRAS/353/1025) and Bik+2019 (J/A+A/624/A63), and our own photometric catalog covering the NACO images of W51 IRS2. The high-resolution images of W51 IRS2, taken by the adaptive optics NIR camera NACO (NaCo Nasmyth Adaptive Optics System Near-Infrared Imager and Spectrograph, NAOS CONICA) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) 8.2m Unit Telescope (UT4) in Chile, were obtained from Figueredo+ (2008AJ....136..221F 2008AJ....136..221F). There is a total of 3003 stars in our field that were not documented in any previous NIR catalog of the region, with 88 of these sources being located within the protoclusters. There are 2265 newly detected sources with corresponding H-band detections, and 1298 with corresponding J-band detections.
