Abstract:
We present results for Lyα forest and metal absorbers from
∼7km/s resolution Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) data for
QSO PKS 0405-123 (z=0.574). We analyze strong and weak samples of
Lyα forest lines, containing 60 absorbers with column density
log N(HI)≥13.3 over 0.002<z<0.423 and 44 with logN(HI)≥13.1 over
0.020<z<0.234, respectively.
Description:
PKS 0405-123 was observed with HST and STIS using grating E140M for 10
orbits (27,208s) on 1999 January 24 and 1999 March 7. Direct images in
Gunn r and multiobject spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the
PKS 0405-123 field were made on 1995 January 2 UT at the Canada-France
Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), using the Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS),
the O300 grism, and the z5 band-limiting filter.

Note (1): Assumes that the component structure is correct.
Note (2): λλ denotes a doublet. Some ≥4σ features in
the STIS data, in particular blueward of ∼1200Å, correspond to
higher order Lyman lines which did not provide useful constraints
for profile fits. We find unidentified features at 1154.93, 1168.96,
1172.53, 1180.10, 1203.32 and 1404.90~Å. The FUSE data do not
confirm the ones at λ<1187Å, however.

d = Upper limits from apparent optical depth method of
Savage & Semback (1991ApJ...379..245S 1991ApJ...379..245S).
e = FUSE data used for PII upper limit column density.
f = Column density from Prochaska et al. (2004, Cat. J/ApJ/617/718).
g = The CIV fit is from archival STIS G230M data.

distance modulus from our adopted cosmology.
Note (2): Errors are ∼100km/s in the rest frame.

from the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED)
[EY94] = Ellingson & Yee (1994ApJS...92...33E 1994ApJS...92...33E).
Note (4): Flag on Ref, defined as follows:
f = Listed in both Spinrad et al. (1993AJ....106....1S 1993AJ....106....1S) and Ellingson & Yee
(1994ApJS...92...33E 1994ApJS...92...33E). Redshifts are from Spinrad et al.
(1993AJ....106....1S 1993AJ....106....1S) and are relatively less certain. Photometry is
consistent between the two papers except for galaxy 177, where
Δr=0.1mag. We take the Ellingson & Yee (1994ApJS...92...33E 1994ApJS...92...33E)
value for consistency. The EY93 nomenclature in NED is an error.
g = Blended with star. Take magnitude as lower limit for galaxy. Blended
nature and galaxy type from J. Prochaska (private communication, 2005).
