Abstract:
We observed two faint tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs), NGC 5291 N and
NGC 5291 S, with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space
Telescope. We detect strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)
emission at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, 12.6, and 16.5µm, which match
models of groups of 100 carbon atoms with an equal mixture of neutral
and ionized PAHs.
Description:
IRS observations were taken of both TDG-N and TDG-S. The IRS
low-resolution data were obtained with Short-Low (IRS-SL), which
operates between 5.2 and 7.7µm (IRS-SL2) and 7.4-14.5µm
(IRS-SL1). IRAC data in all four bands were acquired using a two-point
map centered on NGC 5291 (13:47:23.00-30:25:30.0 [J2000.0]).

b = Source is outside HI ring.
c = Galaxy 435 (Malphrus et al. 1997AJ....114.1427M 1997AJ....114.1427M;
Richter 1984A&AS...58..131R 1984A&AS...58..131R).
d = 16 pixel diameter aperture.
e = TDG-N, source K09.09 (CTS K09.09 in Simbad, Pena et al.

f = TDG-S; the tail is source G ([LHC79] G in Simbad) in Longmore et al.
(1979MNRAS.188..285L 1979MNRAS.188..285L).
g = Magnitude of the autoflux density as source is extended beyond
16 pixel diameter aperture. Note the aperture correction for an
infinitely extended source has not been applied. The correction
factors listed in the Spitzer Observers Manual are 0.94, 0.94,
0.63, 0.69 at [3.6], [4.5], [5.8], and [8.0], respectively.
h = Seashell.
i = NGC 5291.

Malphrus et al. (1997AJ....114.1427M 1997AJ....114.1427M):
[LHC79] A or [LHC79] N in Simbad
Note (3): Identification from Duc & Mirabel (1998A&A...333..813D 1998A&A...333..813D); in Simbad:
[DM98] Knot a ;
[DM98] A ;
[DM98] N .
Note (4): Classification from the SED match, defined as follows:
TDG = candidate tidal dwarf galaxy;
SF = reasonable fit to TDG-N, star-forming region;
N = "notched" SED, but poor match to TDG-N;
E = elliptical;
E* = elliptical/foreground star;
S0 = S0;
S0* = S0/foreground star;
AGN = active galactic nuclei;
AGN? = not a simple power law.
