Abstract:
We present new multiwavelength submillimeter continuum measurements of
the circumstellar dust around 48 young stars in the rho Ophiuchi dark
clouds. Supplemented with previous 1.3mm observations of an
additional 99 objects from the literature, the statistical
distributions of disk masses and submillimeter colors are calculated
and compared to those in the Taurus-Auriga region. These basic
submillimeter properties of young stellar objects in both environments
are shown to be essentially identical.
Description:
The Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) instrument at
the 15m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) was used to observe 48
eho Oph YSOs during two runs in 2004 April and 2005 June. The
observations were conducted in photometry mode, providing simultaneous
measurements of the 450 and 850um continuum emission within FWHM
beam diameters of 9" and 14", respectively.
Images of the 350um continuum for seven YSOs were obtained with the
Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera II (SHARC II) on the 10m
Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) telescope in 2004 March and
June.

Note (1): From the spectral index α defined in the 2-25µm range,
the SED classification is the following:
FS = Flat Spectrum, (star + disk + envelope?), -0.3<α<0.3;
I = Class I (star + disk + envelope), α≤-0.3;
II = Class II (star + disk), 0.3≤α≤1.6;
III = Class III (star only), α>1.6
Note (2): Quoted errors are the 1σ rms noise levels and do not
include systematic errors in the absolute flux calibration (∼25% at
350 and 450µm, ∼10% at 850µm, and ∼20% at 1.3mm).
