Abstract:
We present a multiwavelength study of the double radio-relic cluster
A1240 at z=0.195. Our Subaru-based weak-lensing analysis detects three
mass clumps forming an ∼4Mpc filamentary structure elongated in a
north-south orientation. The northern
(M200=2.61-0.60+0.51x1014M☉) and middle
(M200=1.09-0.43+0.34x1014M☉) mass clumps separated by
∼1.3Mpc are associated with A1240 and colocated with the X-ray peaks
and cluster galaxy overdensities revealed by Chandra and MMT/Hectospec
observations, respectively. The southern mass clump
(M200=1.78-0.55+0.44x1014M☉), ∼1.5Mpc to the south of
the middle clump, coincides with the galaxy overdensity in A1237, the
A1240 companion cluster at z=0.194. Considering the positions,
orientations, and polarization fractions of the double radio relics
measured by the LOFAR study, we suggest that A1240 is a postmerger
binary system in the returning phase with a time since collision of
∼1.7Gyr. With the SDSS DR16 data analysis, we also find that A1240 is
embedded in the much larger scale (∼80Mpc) filamentary structure whose
orientation is in remarkable agreement with the hypothesized merger
axis of A1240.
Description:
The A1240 field was observed with the Subaru Prime Focus Camera
(Suprime-Cam) on 2014 February 25 in the g and r bands
(PI: D. Wittman) with total integrations of 720 and 2880s,
respectively, as part of the MC2 radio-relic-selected optical
imaging survey (Golovich+ 2019, J/ApJS/240/39).
Since the Subaru/Suprime-Cam filter throughputs are similar to those
of SDSS, we calibrated the Subaru photometry using the star catalog
from SDSS DR16, which covers the A1240 field.
Spectroscopic observations (PI: K. Finner) of the A1240 field were
carried out with the 6.5m MMT/Hectospec as part of the Korean GMT
(K-GMT) project. The 300 fiber Hectospec instrument was used with a
spectral coverage of 3650-9200Å.
Cluster member candidates within the 1° field of view of the
instrument were selected from Subaru imaging, archival SDSS imaging,
and SDSS photometric redshifts. Photometric redshift candidates were
selected within z=0.195±0.05. The candidates were split into a
bright configuration with objects r≤20 and a faint configuration with
r≤21. The bright configuration was observed on 2019 March 5 for 1hr
of integration, and the faint configuration was observed on 2019 March
26 with 2hr of integration, both on a 20 minute cadence.

valid only for the MMT data. We adopted a cross-correlation score
r-value (Tonry & Davis 1979AJ.....84.1511T 1979AJ.....84.1511T) RXC, a measure of the
significance of the cross-correlation peak, greater than 4 as secure
redshift measurements.
Note (2): The catalog source codes are the following:
MMT = our MMT/Hectospec observations (477 occurrences),
B09 = Barrena+ 2009, J/A+A/503/357 (143 occurrences),
G19 = Golovich+ 2019, J/ApJS/240/39 (187 occurrences),
SDSS = SDSS DR16; see V/154 (127 occurrences).
