Abstract:
Robust estimation of star formation rates (SFRs) at higher redshifts
(z≳1) using UV-optical-near-infrared (NIR) photometry is contingent
on the ability of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to
constrain the dust attenuation, stellar metallicity, and star
formation history (SFH) simultaneously. IR-derived dust luminosities
can help break the degeneracy between these parameters, but IR data
are often not available. Here, we explore strategies for SED fitting
at z≳1 in the absence of IR data using a sample of log M*>10.2
star-forming galaxies from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep
Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) for which 24µm data are
available. We adopt the total IR luminosity (LTIR) obtained from
24µm as the "ground truth," which allows us to assess how well it
can be recovered (as Ldust) from UV-optical-NIR SED fitting. We test
a variety of dust attenuation models, stellar population synthesis
models, metallicity assumptions, and SFHs separately to identify which
assumptions maximize the agreement (correlation and linearity) between
LTIR and Ldust. We find that a flexible dust attenuation law performs
best. For stellar populations, we find that
Bruzual & Charlot (2003MNRAS.344.1000B 2003MNRAS.344.1000B) models are favored over those
of Eldridge+ (2017PASA...34...58E 2017PASA...34...58E). Fixing the stellar metallicity at
solar value is preferred to other fixed values or leaving it as a free
parameter. For SFHs, we find that minimizing the variability in the
recent (<100Myr) SFH improves the agreement with LTIR. Finally, we
provide a catalog of galaxy parameters (including M* and SFR) for
CANDELS galaxies with logM*>8 and 0.7<z<1.3, obtained using the models
we found to be the most robust.
Description:
Our sample of galaxies with photometry in the rest-frame
UV-mid-infrared regime is drawn from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared
Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS).
We focus on four of the five CANDELS fields with the most
comprehensive photometry: EGS, GOODS-S, UDS, and COSMOS. We use
publicly available photometric catalogs for each field:
Stefanon+ (2017, J/ApJS/229/32) for EGS, Guo+ (2013, J/ApJS/207/24)
for GOODS-S, Galametz+ (2013, J/ApJS/206/10) for UDS, and
Nayyeri+ (2017, J/ApJS/228/7) for COSMOS. The instruments and
passbands used for the SED fitting in this work are Blanco (U), Very
Large Telescope (VLT)/VIMOS (U), Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Advanced
Camera for Surveys (ACS; F435W, F606W, F755W, F814W, and zgoods),
HST/WFC3 (F098M, F105W, F125W, F140W, and F160W), Canada-France-Hawaii
Telescope (CFHT)/MegaCam(u, g, r, i, and z), CFHT/WIRCAM (J, H, and K)
Subaru/SuprimeCam (B, g, V, RC , r, i, and z), United Kingdom Infrared
Telescope (UKIRT)/WFCAM (J, H, and K), Mayall/NEWFIRM (J1, J2, J3, H1,
H2, and Ks ), VLT/VISTA (Y, J, H, and Ks), VLT/ISAAC (Ks), VLT/HAWK-I
(Y and Ks), and VLT/HAWK-K (Ks).
Spitzer/IRAC photometry (Channels 1-4) and 24um Spitzer/MIPS are also
utilized for each field. See Section 2.
