Distances and metallicities of high- and intermediate-velocity clouds. Wakker B.P. <Astrophys. J. Suppl. Ser. 136, 463 (2001)> =2001ApJS..136..463W 2001ApJS..136..463W
ADC_Keywords: Molecular clouds ; Abundances ; Stars, distances Keywords: Galaxy: halo - SM: abundances - ISM: clouds - ISM: structure - radio lines: ISM - ultraviolet: ISM Description: A table is presented that summarizes published absorption line measurements for the high- and intermediate-velocity clouds (HVCs and IVCs). New values are derived for N(HI) in the direction of observed probes, in order to arrive at reliable abundances and abundance limits (the HI data are described in Paper II, Wakker et al., 2001ApJS..136..537W 2001ApJS..136..537W). Distances to stellar probes are revisited and calculated consistently, in order to derive distance brackets or limits for many of the clouds, taking care to properly interpret nondetections. Note (3): Note on HVC velocity u = HVC velocity at which an upper limit to the HI column density is set; a = indicates the second component of a multicomponent absorption; b = indicates the second component of a multicomponent absorption; c = indicates the third component of a multicomponent absorption. Note (5): Note on Column density for ion: N = Proper derivation done in reference; L = Log of column density given in reference; W = Converted from equivalent width; E = Detection inferred from large equivalent width; t = indicates a 21-cm observation. Nion column contains the column density of the absorbing cool HI and Abd column contains the optical depth of the absorption. S = Upper limit based on S/N ratio in spectrum. Note (6): See Appendix A for further details. U = Detection in stellar spectrum sets upper limit l = Significant non-detection sets lower limit (limit on colum density below (expected value)/(safety factor)) L = Significant non-detection sets lower limit (limit on column density below (expected value)/(3 times safety factor)) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: cloud.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 2 I2 --- CNum Cloud number 4 A1 --- --- [=] 6- 29 A24 --- Type Nature of the cloud -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: telescop.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 2 A2 --- Tel Telescope code 4 A1 --- --- [=] 6- 65 A60 --- Text Telescope -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: refs.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 3 I3 --- Ref Reference number 5- 44 A40 --- BibCodes List of (up to 2) bibCode designating the articles 46- 84 A39 --- Aut Author's name 86-285 A200 --- Com Comments -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byte-by-byte Description of file: notes.dat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes Format Units Label Explanations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- 3 A3 --- Note Note code 5- 80 A76 --- Text Text of the note -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History: From electronic version of the journal References: Wakker et al., Paper II 2001ApJS..136..537W 2001ApJS..136..537W
