ADC_Keywords: Galaxies, nearby; X-ray sources; Surveys Keywords: X-ray identification ; X-ray sources ; Andromeda Galaxy ; Stellar populations Abstract: We introduce the New-ANGELS program, an XMM-Newton survey of a ∼7.2deg2 area around M31, which aims to study the X-ray populations in the M31 disk and the X-ray-emitting hot gas in the inner halo of M31 up to 30kpc. In this first paper, we report the catalog of 4506 detected X-ray sources and attempt to cross-identify or roughly classify them. We identify 352 single stars in the foreground, 35 globular clusters, and 27 supernova remnants associated with M31, as well as 62 active galactic nuclei, 59 galaxies, and one galaxy cluster in the background. We uniquely classify 236 foreground stars and 17 supersoft sources based on their X-ray colors. X-ray binaries (83 low-mass and one high-mass) are classified based on their X-ray colors and X-ray variabilities. The remaining X-ray sources either have too low signal-to-noise ratios to calculate their X-ray colors or do not have a unique classification, so are regarded as unclassified. The X-ray source catalog is published online. Studies of the X-ray source populations and the contribution of X-ray sources in the unresolved X-ray emissions based on this catalog will be published in companion papers. Description: In order to have a complete survey of the X-ray sources in and around M31, we make use of all the available XMM-Newton observations that have a pointing position within the projected radius r≤30kpc around the center of M31 (see Figures 1 and 2). In summary, there are 137 observations matching our selection criteria. The total/net (after removing strong background flares) exposure times are ∼3.1/2.5, 3.1/2.6, and 2.7/1.9Ms for the EPIC cameras (MOS1, MOS2, and PN, respectively). Table A1 lists the final selection of observations used for analysis. The factor for each detector and energy band is different, depending on the detector, pattern selection, and filter used during the observation. So the ECFs (fluxes and energy conversion factors) were derived with XSPEC using on-axis response matrices, assuming a power-law model with photon index Γ=1.7 and Galactic foreground absorption of NH=7x1020cm2 (Stark+ 1992ApJS...79...77S 1992ApJS...79...77S ; see also Pietsch+ 2005A&A...434..483P 2005A&A...434..483P) to be the universal source spectrum for the ECF calculation. Note (2): The flux and the flux uncertainties of all-EPIC are weighted from those of PN, MOS1, and MOS2. See Equation D1 and D2 in Appendix D. Note (3): The likelihood is calculated as in Equation (D3). In principle, the detection likelihood also follows L=-ln(p), where p is the probability of the result of at least the observed counts by Poissonian random fluctuation. The probability p is calculated from the incomplete Gamma function P(a, b), where a is the raw source counts and b is the raw background counts in the detection cell. Note (4): The extent radius and its 1σ uncertainty parameters are obtained when fitting the extended source with a convolution of the instrumental PSF and an extent model (β model with fixed β=2/3) (ν=n+3 in Equation (D3)). Note (5): This is calculated in terms of the source count rate and instrument readout. For pointlike sources, it is defined as the source count rate times the frame time, divided by an instrument-specific pile-up threshold. For extended sources, it is derived from the source counts per instrument pixel times the frame time, divided by the number of instrument pixels covered by an image pixel and by a pile-up threshold. Note (6): VARCHI2=1/(n-1)Σnk=1((Fk-FEPICk_)2, where Fk is EP_FLUX for each observation and σk is EPFLUXERR. FEPIC is the mean EP_FLUX for all detections. Note (7): A high VAR_PROB means that the flux of the source is almost constant throughout the observations. See Appendix D for the equation. Note (8): FLUXVAR=maxk,l∈[1,n](|Fk-Fl|/(σk2l_2)0.5), where Fk is EP_RATE and σk is EPRATEERR. Note (9): The classification types include: fg star = foreground star (351 occurrences +236 candidates), AGN = active galactic nuclei (62 occurrences +505 candidates), galaxy = background galaxies (59 occurrences +3 candidates), GlC = globular cluster (35 occurrences), GCl = galaxy cluster (1 occurrence +5 candidates), SNR = supernova remnant (27 occurrences +4 candidates), HMXB = high-mass XRB (1 occurrence), LMXB = low-mass XRB (84 occurrences), SSS = supersoft source (11 occurrences +6 candidates) superbubble = (1 candidate) The classification of each candidate source is enclosed within angle brackets (<>) for easy identification.
