Abstract:
We provide a census of the apparent stellar angular momentum within
one effective radius of a volume-limited sample of 260 early-type
galaxies (ETGs) in the nearby Universe, using the integral-field
spectroscopy obtained in the course of the ATLAS3D project. We exploit
the λR parameter (previously used via a constant threshold
value of 0.1) to characterize the existence of two families of ETGs:
slow rotators which exhibit complex stellar velocity fields and often
include stellar kinematically distinct cores, and fast rotators which
have regular velocity fields. Our complete sample of 260 ETGs leads to
a new criterion to disentangle fast and slow rotators which now
includes a dependency on the apparent ellipticity ε.
Description:
The ATLAS3D project is based on a volume-limited sample of 260 targets
extracted from a complete sample of ETGs. A detailed description of
the selection process and properties for the sample are given in
Paper I (Cappellari et al., 2011, Cat. J/MNRAS/413/813).

Note (1): These being replaced by the global ellipticity measured from the
outer isophotes for galaxies with clear bars (see text) as indicated
by a "C" in column "Band".
Note (2): Source of the radial ellipticity profiles as follows:
G =green photometry
R = red photometry
S = SAURON photometry
C = for galaxies which have strong bars significantly affecting the
measurement of εe, and for which the outer ellipticity
measurement εglob (see Paper II, 2011MNRAS.414.2923K 2011MNRAS.414.2923K) is
used instead
Note (3): λR is defined as <R|V|>/<R.sqrt(V2+σ2)>
(Jesseit et al. 2009MNRAS.397.1202J 2009MNRAS.397.1202J), a dimensionless parameter
designed to account for radial changes of angular momentum content
in kinematic fields; slow rotators have λR<0.1.
