Abstract:
We use 101 galaxies selected from the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey to
investigate the effect of aperture size on the star formation rate,
metallicity, and reddening determinations for galaxies. Our sample
includes galaxies of all Hubble types except ellipticals with global
star formation rates (SFRs) ranging from 0.01 to 100M☉/yr,
metallicities in the range 7.9≲log(O/H)+12≲9.0, and reddening of
0≲A(V)≲3.3. We compare the SFR, metallicity, and reddening derived
from nuclear spectra to those derived from integrated spectra.

Note (1): Classes H II, AMB and AGN are defined according to the Kewley et al.
(2001, Cat. J/ApJS/132/37) theoretical classification scheme.
AGN = Galaxies that lie above the theoretical "extreme starburst line" in
the standard optical diagnostic diagrams
AMB = Galaxies that lie in the AGN region in one diagram but in the HII
region section of the other diagram are classed as "ambiguous"
galaxies.
H II = Galaxies that lie below the line are classed as HII region-like
Sy1 = Seyfert 1 galaxies
Note (2): Quality flags Q are defined as follows:
1 = Object classified using [N II]/Hα, [S II]/Hα, and
[O III]/Hβ;
2 = Object classified using [N II]/Hα and [O III]/HHβ only;
3 = Object classified using [N II]/Hα only.
